Most of this material was previously available in the package Sidney Bechet: Master Musician. Recorded between 1932 and 1941, these sessions capture one of the true men of genius in jazz history, at the top of his game in several awesome group contexts. The hot licks of "I Found a New Baby," "Shag," and "Maple Leaf Rag" are traded by Bechet and trumpeter Tommy Ladnier, co-leaders of the New Orleans Feetwarmers. On "Weary Blues" they are joined by reedman Mezz Mezzrow. On "The Sheik of Araby," from 1941, Bechet is a one-man band, overdubbing all the parts--clarinet, soprano and tenor sax, piano, bass, and drums. --John Swenson

This is the real deal: RCA's own original masters digitally restored. So much of Bechet on CD are European labels where disks are often made from second-hand sources. The dates cover 12 different sessions between 1932 and 1941, acknowledged by most sources to be a peak period of creativity by the clarinet/soprano sax master. Some of the better known sidemen include Mezz Mezzrow (clarinet, tenor sax), Kenny Clark, Sid Catlett, Zutty Singleton & Baby Dodds (drums), Earl Hines & Jelly Roll Morton (piano), Rex Stewart & Red Allen (trumpet). The mostly bright, snappy numbers are a blast of volcanic energy, and the occasional ballads will squeeze your heart.

The sound quality is the best I've heard on a Bechet CD: bright, crisp high range that does proper justice to the cutting, agressive sound unique to Sidney. If you have any taste for traditional New Orleans flavored traditional jazz or swing, you would be nuts not to nail down a copy, especially at the ridiculously low price being charge by third party vendors. Do it now, before this materpiece disappears.

What more can one say about Sydney that can not be appreciated from just listening to his music. He had a depth of feeling, passion and insight into the black human experience that was expressed in his music, and he played with a unique technique that is clearly his own.

I had all, or most of the cuts on this cd on a late 1940s or early 1950s 10 inch LP which was worn out decades ago.
I particularly wanted the performances of The Mooche and Strange Fruit on these sessions, and that made this purchase a no-brainer.

Sidney Bechet was an amazing musician, and this album is a joy to listen to. One of the other reviewers mentioned the essentially Black quality of the music and I agree totally. The jazz that emerges is so New Orleans, so silky, so mellow, so transporting. There is humor, there are songs that make you want to get up and dance, and there is the inimitable sound of one of the greatest Jazz players ever: Sidney Bechet. If you haven't heard his music yet, don't wait! It's only a mouse click away. You won't regret it.

I first learned about Sidney Bechet when my jazz loving aunt gave me an LP of some of his music when I was a teenager. Some of the same tunes are on this album which one would be hard pressed to find a more perfect single Sidney Bechet CD. The sound quality is excellent and the tunes are just great! I highly recommend this album as a best of CD. It is a good one for out-and-out fans of Bechet and for people just becoming interested in this great jazz musician.
