By Michael Brad Richman HALL OF FAMEVINE VOICE on July 1, 2010
Format: Audio CD
Red Holloway's "Legends of Acid Jazz" CD is another of my Newbury Comics cut-out bin finds. This disc collects the original LPs "The Burner" and "Red Soul" from 1963 and 1965 respectively, both recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in his Englewood Cliffs studio. A variety of notable soul jazz musicians join Red on these dates, including John Patton, Eric Gale, Lonnie Smith, Norman Simmons and even George Benson. There is nothing groundbreaking here just solid, funky, enjoyable grooves. Get this CD before yet another "Legend" disappears.
