Characters progress through an adventure called a Legend, which consists of large cards being read to the group that introduce game mechanics fluidly, monsters to add to the board, and a narrative element at reasonable pace to make the scenario feel like its happening over time. This is even more exaggerated by how action economy works, where heroes have to spend their movement and combat actions over rounds that are referred to as “hours”. Certain scenarios unfold over the course of days, giving the illusion of time passing within the game.
The objective of the game varies depending on the Legend at hand, however in each case the castle cannot be overrun. Because slaying enemies advances the narrative track closer to the end of the game, the players must cooperatively strategize on how to effectively defeat monsters and capture objectives before the story comes to an end. Managing hours within a day is not a tedious task however, as time-consuming activities are limited to movement and combat rounds to keep the game simpler.
Exploration consists of unveiling fog tokens which have surprises behind them (treasure, monsters, quest objectives, etc.) and visiting wells that refresh your characters primary resource, which doubles as health and more powerful dice rolls. Additionally, merchants are at certain squares where you can visit and upgrade your characters strength or purchase items from the shop.
The cooperative element of the game is heavily emphasized, as some of the stronger monsters within the game need multiple heroes to be able to overcome them. Discussions of efficient strategy and action economy are not out of place in between bouts of excitement as players land much needed high dice rolls at a critical moment.
Even with all members of the group collaborating effectively this game is challenging. Monsters have an early advantage of adding doubles on dice rolls together, and heroes can quickly get overwhelmed by multiple objectives entering the story as time passes and the narrative track advances. Some objectives may even be contingent upon earlier ones, changing the degree of difficulty if not accomplished early on.
Component Quality and Setup:
There are boatloads of small pieces that come with this game, and surprisingly a roll of baggies to cover all the types of tokens and monsters so they can remain organized. At first I thought it might be overwhelming to have so many pieces, but the adventures themselves do a good job of highlighting what you will need for that adventure and what can be returned to the box. Thus, after punching out all the tokens and putting all the characters and monsters on their bases, setup was practically done.
That said, the rules are moderately complex. They aren’t as simple as a casual board game like Monopoly, but they certainly aren’t on the level of Mage Wars or Talisman. I would recommend about 30 minutes before you want to play to read the rules and get the game pieces sorted, and also to become familiar with the unique story (Legend) structure.
The quality of the pieces are solid. Figurines are all represented by cardboard punch out tokens on plastic stands that click in once situated, and the board has a very durable feel to it. All the counters for heroes are wooden. As an added bonus, all the heroes have male and female versions, sparing any gender to class associations in this game.
Replayability:
The base game comes with 5 Legends. The first is an introductory mission that explains the base rules, and the following ones introduce the unique rules respective to that mission. 5 quests may not sound like a lot, but each one comes with about one to two hours’ worth of gameplay – depending on your group’s skill and if you win or restart. There are also easy version of certain Legend cards so you could do an easy mode and a normal mode.
That said, the Legends are narrative in nature and there is no random element beyond dice rolls in combat and item locations, so once played you probably won’t pick that same Legend for a while. Once you play the game the next step is to aim for an expansion pack (only one that adds a Legend at the time of this review)
Overall:
If your game group wants a fun but challenging fantasy cooperative game with narrative gameplay this is a solid choice. Each Legend is interesting and explain the reasons for monsters being where they are, and provides a unique level of immersion that other games may overlook by jumping into the hack and slash part of it.
The story of the Legends is cumulative and builds upon one another but the power of the heroes between each adventure is reset (or set to specific parameters) so this is not a campaign style game. If that is something your group is specifically looking for with the narrative element I would suggest a game like Descent instead. However this game is self-contained and great if you have a regular game group or a weekend to burn.
Top reviews from other countries
The board is huge, the bits and pieces are so well defined and there are plastic bags o put cards etc in....I wish other games include bags.
The box is heavy and items are very detailed.
There is a lot of strategy, thinking ahead and planning and it is these tactics that make the game so enjoyable.
Do not try to be selfish and thing you and you alone can do everything. Best way to play the game is to view the problem(s) ahead and agree what actions you have to face together.
Ofcourse, there are times when one hero may be able to accomplish something by his/herself but generally think ahead before doing so as the rest of your heroes may suffer some bad consequences.
Fantastic ! Wish I could give more than five stars.
Kudos to the Kosmos.
An absolute must buy.
