Note that Wright spends a lot of time with some of the characters that weren't quite as important in book one (Vamps & Crew) and introduces us to some new ones (good and very, very bad). Never fear, you will meet some of your favorites from the last book, but expect to see them later in the story.
Vamps is awesome as he brings a little street fighting to our demonic visitors (and their minions) and we learn a little more about The Gates and exactly what is coming through them.
As usual, expect the fighting to be bloody and gruesome and expect action-packed and truly excellent storytelling. You simply won't want to stop reading until you reach the last page.,
I want the next book now!
We're given more time with Vamps and you might be surprised how this “hood” has affected events, and people. There is a close up look into the “other ship” and Hernandez. Daniel gives us some much needed answers. New heroes rise up as do new villains. I won't post spoilers, but OMG! You need to read this!
Iain doesn't hold any punches, and he never fails to give us a reason to keep turning the pages. The storytelling is as solid as ever. He weaves so many different perspectives together so tightly that jumping from one character to the next is smooth.
The bonus material is going to freak you out in the best way! Fans of Final Winter will be pleased!
I think this is going to be my favorite of Iain's work.
“Legion” – the second in the “Gates” series by Iain Rob Wright takes place simultaneously with the timeline of the initial book.
Mysterious stones have turned up overnight all over the Earth. Touching one brings certain death, but that’s only the beginning. The stones eventually transform into shimmering gates that act as portals for the denizens of Hell to spew forth and wreak their havoc. The Earth falls fairly easily, but there are a few scattered groups of people who resist, and even gain a foothold in the struggle to defeat their mortal enemy. What seems like a hopeless, winless situation serves to bolster the spirits and resolve of those left behind. The question is; can they beat back Hell itself to regain the life they once held dear, or is all lost?
The way this book dovetails seamlessly with the first in the series is a brilliant piece of work. I love how “the rest of the story” gets told in a few circumstances which gives this point in time a level of depth that was definitely needed to make a good story great. Legion, while a continuation of sorts, I felt also works well as a stand-alone novel, with the back stories further explored in the follow up becoming the main plot lines and the blanks are filled in with the Gates.
All in all, a great read with characters that grow on you. I am eagerly anticipating catching up with the survivors when the story continues.
The characters are interesting and unique. The dialogue is appropriate. Readers of apocalyptic material must always suspend belief about the reasonable possibility of such an event. The story is original and horrific! I was however incredulous at the magnitude of the behavior of characters who seemed to sleepwalk through the plot. They manifested strange reactions to situations that seemed false even within the context of apocalyptic horror stories. People wouldn't really act that way. That's just my opinion.
