The result was LOST AND FOUND, and the story of a young autistic child lost in a blizzard with his service dog struck a chord with readers and reviewers, and prompted demands for "what happens next?" HIDE AND SEEK happens next, and takes place only a few weeks after the first story ends. September's tragic history hinted at in the first book comes to the forefront, and answering readers' requests, Macy-Cat has his own storyline that figures much more prominently in the book. After all, I'm an equal opportunity pet lover! The 3rd book in the series SHOW AND TELL brings the story full circle.
And now the new series of novellas feature Keiki, the Rottie pup and her trainer Lia. I'm excited to share their adventures as they both grow up, and learn more about life, love, and what it means to be heroes.
This past year my home in North Texas was inundated with horrific floods. Weirdly enough, I'd already included thunderstorms, tornadoes and floods in the plot of SHOW AND TELL, well before weather ran amok in real life. The tragedy of dogfights sadly is also a real life issue in my part of the world. And I'm also constantly inspired by the heroics of both pets and people who overcome incredible obstacles. So it felt appropriate to also set Keiki and Lia's first adventure together in North Texas in similar circumstances.
I hope you enjoy all of these books as much as I do writing them. My SEPTEMBER DAY series includes the names of winners of my hugely popular NAME THAT DOG and NAME THAT CAT contest, as I've done with the previous two stories. I plan to hold a similar contest to name pet characters in future KEIKI & LIA Thrillers.
And yes, it is true you can train cats and understand dog behavior. For more on that, refer to one of my nonfiction books on the subject, like ComPETability: Solving Behavior Problems in Your Multi-Dog Household and ComPETability: Solving Behavior Problems in Your Multi-Cat Household.
