Anyone who has attempted to manually slice garlic cloves into uniformly thin slices will appreciate this nifty little tool. Although it is marketed as a cutter for more than just garlic, we have only used it as a garlic slicer so I cannot speak to its usefulness when it comes to other foods.

Here are my comments on the Leifheit Cutter:

PROS:
-Truly effortless operation. We had a Bodum slicer before (has since been discontinued) and I never knew that slicing garlic could be so easy! One hardly notices that something is happening at all but then the clove is already sliced oh-so-thinly and one is done.
- The cutter is designed to constantly move the garlic clove around while the upper part is turned so the clove never gets stuck, a problem we occasionally had with the Bodum.
- The red bottom part is actually a removable stand/lid. Practical for either keeping the slices contained until using them, or for protecting the countertop surface from sticky garlic residue...
- So easy to clean. High marks for that! The inner part can be removed with two side push tabs, separating the container from the actual blade part. All parts can go in the dishwasher and because the cutter can be so neatly taken apart, there are virtually no "nooks and crannies" where food could get stuck.

CONS (minor, but want to mention them regardless):
- Our old Bodum slicer locked the top part to the bottom part and the garlic was sliced by only turning the top handle. The Leifheit in contrast does not lock, requiring a little bit of pushing down and turning at the same time. As I mentioned above, operation is really effortless, but I still think it would be even easier if the slight push-down wouldn't be required at all.

Picked this up on clearance as a stocking stuffer. Thought I should try it out on garlic. It creates uniform slivers far finer than if I were slicing the garlic. To mince the garlic I then crosscut with a heavy sharp knife. Needless to say if this handy device goes in a stocking the stocking will be mine. I may have to break down and buy more from Amazon for friends as no one who cooks with garlic should be without one of the these gadgets.

One reviewer suggests that the design should not require any effort to press and turn. I don't have an electric garlic press (is there such a thing?) and this takes less effort than a garlic press which one squeezes. As for the top not being attached to the bottom, the item is small enough to be picked up whole with one hand.

Cleaning could not be easier. All the garlic is sliced and perhaps one has to poke the last slice out, but that is all. Rinse and you are done.

This is a great slicer for the price. The only reason for one star less is that you need to push and twist at the same time. It does get a bit tiring if you're planning to slice a lot. Quick review:
Pros:
-Reasonable price
-Makes paper thin slices
-Small so doesnt take up a lot of space
-Easy to clean

Cons:
-Need to push down firmly and twist at the same time
-Makes "shaved" thin slices (depends on what your preference is, some may not like the flimsy feel of the flaky thin slices)

This thing does indeed slice garlic razor thin just like Pauli in Goodfellas! Easy to use and clean up, takes a pretty big load too. I'll use this one for garlic only and get another to shave the Parmigiano Reggiano.

This product is an excellent product that is made in China for a Germany company and much better at slicing garlic and ginger root than a previous product Casabella Garlic Slicer, Green also purchased. The slices are thin and the only drawbacks I have seen are sometimes there being the residual of uncut garlic and ginger root at bottom of the feed tub which will need to be extracted with a knife or fork and also the ginger root had to be cut in half to be placed in the feed tube which has a divider. The are no definite ways of loading the feed tube with one to three pieces of garlic or ginger root in order to determine if having more in the feed tube would eliminate the uncut pieces at the bottom of the feed tube. The blades are safe in that the direction of the cutting edges are facing away from the direction of the bottom of the product so there is no possible cutting of fingers when cleaning the bottom of the product.

It doesn't cut effortlessly but using this contraption is a lot more convenient than cutting the garlic with a knife. It's designed to do 1 thing and it does it pretty well. When using sliced garlic, I prefer very thin slices which means time to cut it properly and space with which to cut it. I have very little counter space and cutting board space so this space saving device is welcome. The holes can be a bit small if you have a mutant sized piece but a cut with a knife solves that problem. I do not think this device is a good replacement for a sharp knife and good skills, if you have those, you can cut faster, but it's great for convenience and uniform slices. It can be hard to turn and does require you to push down while turning like opening a child proof medicine bottle. The friction from this action does make it a bit of a chore and after cutting several juicy pieces in a dry kitchen, the device can get stuck from the sticky garlic juice. Despite the possible and occasional negatives, the device is handy and well designed. It comes apart for easy cleaning and does it's intended job.
