Cooking with Lekue’s platinum silicone is completely safe and has many advantages. This is the ideal material for manufacturing molds or products that will come into contact with food. To thaw, I don't use a microwave. Instead, I use one of two easy methods. I either simply run hot tap water over the bag to loosen and pop the contents right out into my pot, or I put the bag into a pot of simmering water to soften the frozen contents enough to loosen, and then plop it into the empty pot to finish unthawing and heating. Not heating the food directly in the bag will also keep the container material out of the flavor of your food. If you must use the microwave, be sure to remove the slider from the top of the bag.
The only drawback is that they do stain. But for non-plastic infused food, I can live with that.
About price....these are expensive, but for me they are well-used, and well-worth it. I have gotten them cheaper by waiting for a sale on one of the cooking sites and buying a bunch at once, now that they are available in more places. You should never pay more than $15 each, which seems to be the going price right now, but a sale brings them down further.
-Food Safe (not just BPA free, but plastic and petroleum-free). Don't be fooled by "BPA-Free" plastics.
-Slider Rail action is somewhat similar to a zipper plastic storage bag
-withstand very hot and very cold temperatures so you can both cook with them and freeze
-The base allows them to stand up while filling
-The Cup, Ml and Fl oz measurements are handy for knowing exactly how much you are later adding directly to recipes
-holds up to FOUR CUPS (1000 Ml or 30 Fl oz)
-Containers don't crack under pressure of temperature changes like glass
-you can write directly on them with a sharpie and wash it right off when cleaning them
-Take up less of a storage footprint than glass jars
-The slider action is not the smoothest
- I find that the silicone tends to impart a flavor into food that it is heated with. To reduce this, do not fill while the food is hot.
A note about size and purpose. One reviewer complains that the size is too small. I think it's unfair for someone to knock off several stars for wishing the product were bigger than it is. It clearly says 1-LITER bag in the title, and it does hold over FOUR cups, which I tested using a measuring cup. I don't think 4 Cups or more (1000 Ml or 30 Fl oz) is a bad size at all; it is substantial enough for many uses. Do I wish the company made larger, gallon-sized equivalent bags, too? Absolutely, because I'd probably buy those, too. I can't see how a sandwich wouldn't fit (unless you are using giant bread?), but for items like that, I'd rather just use an insulated food-safe zippered pouch or Velcro sandwich wraps like many small sellers make (try Loveforearth or Snack Taxi...Loveforearth makes great gallon sized bags, btw, just not for liquids. I just found another very promising option, too, called the Abeegowrap, which is made of cotton canvas infused with beeswax). Or, you could just use waxed paper or parchment and tape, like my mom did. (Note: if you go the reusable bag route, know that polyurethane or plastics, and even ProCare and PUL liners are NOT food-safe. Opt for ripstop nylon, which is safer, or just plain cotton canvas.)
