I did not find this book cute, fun, or enjoyable. I had to FORCE myself to keep reading and moving forward- my eyes kept skipping huge chunks of text because I started getting bored and frustrated. then I would go back and re-read that text and be disappointed that I even went back because it didn't add anything to the story. and I finally quit with 30% left (per my Kindle.) After I forced myself to read the last 30% (so, Yes, I did finish it), I was still disappointed. I wish I would have spent my kindle allowance on a different book.
AND BEFORE YOU JUST MARK MY REVIEW AS "NOT HELPFUL" BECAUSE YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT OPINION THEN ME, PLEASE REMEMBER: THIS IS MY OPINION.
What I didn't like:
the character development on the two main characters was lacking. actually. more than lacking. These two people are attracted to one another and then all of a sudden they are "so in love" with one another- but how did they get there? one crappy very little unromantic date to the beach where they were physically attracted to one another and then we are supposed to just jump to 'oh yeah they are meant to be.' oye. and then the secondary characters were seriously lacking. all of them. the mother: oh OK we get it- she is a hippy type granolaish emotionally labile individual. I felt like it was just more of the same over and over.
the actual characters themselves. I really did not find anything admirable about the leads. Whit is suffering with the loss of her brother. Yeap. Ok. and then sshe left PA because she didn't want to burden her parents. Come On. Fine. that is the story line but the heart wrenching screaming night terrors, the whole "mystery" of "who is Whit?" it just really wasn't there for me. Then the male lead: Deo. I could not get interested in him. He sounded like a complete loser from the absolute first page and I kept thinking he'd get better. Well, as of "70% completed" on my kindle- he was still a despicable waste. and I'm still not sure how his life was "sooo baddd" that he can relate to Whit's pain. He had an absent father- which ... yes.... is lousy but the way the author describes and forshadows the reader is left thinking he had these major life traumas to overcome. Ehhh I just didn't see it or feel it (althought I repeat- I see that other people really did adore these two! so whatever). Finally. He is an avid potsmoker, unemployed, and has no direction in life and then all of a sudden he dresses up in a borrowed suit and pawns 3 old coins to "save" Whit from having to take a student loan because she can't afford her community college tuition for the next semester.... and this makes him great? this shows his love for her? (bc at this point all of a sudden she has an internal 'need' to be intimate with him.) He finally "mans up" and gets a job in the last 10% of the book- but it just kind of skips the reader til then. Like someone who has done nothing his entire life can just change his mind and be like "oh I"m going to buy this house and run a business now" with no hard work involved. I didn't like it one bit.
Finally. There is a lot of swearing/cussing in this book. Now. that seriously does not normally bother me... but the cussing is kind of like... just for the hell of it. The cuss doesn't even "add" anything (like an explanatory statement! or a deep rooted emotional ... oh F*&) - it's just swearing for fun. I started to actually get offended at parts as a reader. I wanted much more out of a novel.
Strong language. Sexual scenes. Drug use.
This is listed as Young Adult. I would not label it as such.
However, not enough plot for Contemporary/Adult reader.
Deo Beckett is a soulful surfer with a passion for tattoos and beautiful women. On the eve of his twenty-second birthday, he finds himself living with his grandfather, recently unemployed, and seriously adrift. He doesn’t know much about what he wants out of life, but he does know his current situation isn't cutting it.
When Deo meets Whit, she’s all sexy makeup and fierce, smart-ass fun. It doesn’t take him long to see past her tough shell. And when he gets a good look at what's under all the superficial stuff that usually gets his attention, it leaves Deo wondering if there might be more to life than living fast and free.
Too bad Whit has a past she doesn't plan on sharing—no matter how hot Deo is. She might want him, but she knows better than to let her guard down.
Deo falls for Whit, and falls hard. But everything about her, down to that mysterious tattoo and the way she thrashes in her sleep, tells him that the girl he loves is hiding something. And the more he pushes for answers, the more Whit pulls away.
Having your guard up is one thing, but are the lengths Whit goes to to protect her secret worth throwing away the second chance she has at happiness with Deo?
I really enjoyed this book. I think the relationship between Deo & Whit was great. .I think they strived to make each other better. Especially trying to motivate Deo in actually doing something with his life besides being a beach bum. I think she made him think about his future and he wanted her.
I really didn't like Whit when she kept going back & forth whether she wanted him.. I was like hurry up already! You know you want him!
I like that he was her comfort :)
Lengths is a great book and I can't wait to pick up the rest of the series!
