I first ordered an open-box Asus which was similar but for a slightly older Celeron than this one, MUCH nicer IPS display, and the ability to fold over into a tablet. Sent that back because the battery wouldn't charge, and got this instead.
First the bad: The display on this is NOT an IPS display, which I could live with for this price, but it's not a particularly good panel overall. Straight on view of the display is adequate for this kind of device, but the viewing angles are really terrible, and the IPS display on that Asus (which was the same ho-hum resolution) was much, much nicer. It is a matte display, which I prefer, but that's really a personal preference issue. The display is usable, but you aren't going to excitedly tell anyone how great it looks, either. Panel bleed is slight enough that I don't notice it.
That's really the only bad thing I have to say, and even that only loses it 1 star since this thing is currently selling for $160. At the list price of $260 it would stop me from purchasing the device though.
Everything else is better than expected.
It's light, the chassis feels mostly quite stiff and well put together.
I can flex the keyboard if I try, but don't notice any flex in normal usage. The keyboard is nothing to write home about as far as typing feel, but I've used worse. Some modifiers and other non-text keys are a smidge on the small side, but you get used to it pretty quickly.
It's got a decent selection of ports.
Battery life is quite good.
Installed Linux without a hitch.
It's peppier than expected. Don't expect to have 50 tabs open in your browser though. Use it for a couple things at a time and it's just fine though. It's a $160 laptop. Adjust your expectations accordingly.
Storage is emmc, which is essentially an sd card hardwired to the motherboard, but despite this it's again fast enough that for most things you won't find yourself wishing your storage was faster. I know from a youtube video that it does have an m.2 slot open - so if it bothers you that much, just pick up a cheap proper m.2 ssd and you should be in good shape.
Overall I love it. At $160 it's a steal. At $260 I'd look elsewhere.
The 60GB eMMC comes with about 45GB available. Upon set-up, it is crucial one reads each item as presented. . .both Microsoft and Lenovo have desires for a great deal of personal information that the user must OPT OUT OF . It is well presented and honesty displayed. . .easy to un-check the boxes.
There is a slot for a micro-SD card. My 32 GB micro-SD will provide ample storage for my travel uses.
The biggest downside is the Microsoft Windows 10-S Mode. This is Microsoft's attempt to emulated the marketing gimmick Apple employs. . .lock the user out of anything except Apple Apps. Fortunately, Microsoft offers the user the ability to 'switch OFF' the S-mode; thereby allowing the computer to load non-Microsoft programs. After a few hours struggling with the S-Mode, I switched it off and was then able to set up the computer to meet my needs.
UPDATE: To reduce boot time unpin unnecessary apps from the start page. My new boot time is less than 30 seconds. Another reviewer mentioned heat: Indeed the bottom becomes warm, but no warmer than a smartphone when it is heavily used.
Speakers are located on the bottom, precisely placed so when the computer is on one's lap, the speakers are mostly obstructed. The result is far less than ample volume. The headphone jack is the best option.
Background: I have a Nintendo Switch for gaming, a desktop for heavy computing/VR, and a 55 inch smart TV with surround sound for media consumption. This laptop is for travel computing. Doing classes on Blackboard, writing papers on Google Drive, checking military emails and streaming movies from Netflix via the HDMI port.
For that, it works amazing. It does everything I ask it with zero issues.
Step 1: Lower your expectations. This is basically a chromebook, but I needed a computer running windows to check military emails.
Step 2: take it out of S mode.
Step 3: remove the bloatware. Go to add or remove programs and remove what you don't need.
Step 4: Install Chrome
Step 5: remove pinned programs from start menu and task bar
Step 6: In task manager, stop non essential programs from starting up
Step 7: Update the computer
Step 8: Install Avast antivirus.
All of these steps can be found on Google. The easiest thing to do is search "Speed up windows 10 laptop" and you'll find all of these tips. Do them. The computer is lightning fast now. Boot up in 20 seconds.
No, it won't play Farcry 5, or let you edit movies via Adobe Suite. Honestly, starting Microsoft office takes longer than I want, which is why I use Google Drive. Once you strip it down to the bare bones experience (Turning off OneDrive and Cortana), it becomes a pretty good device, with a 4hr battery, HDMI output and great browsing experience.
