For example I can now stop apps from restarting and running in the background. That's what kills these phones. All this stuff, sometimes you can't even find using 'cleaner apps', that all take little bites out of your RAM until it's all gone. Now I can tell my phone to not auto-restart things. Stuff like Pandora; I don't need that stupid thing running in the back ground 24x7 giving me useless updates about stuff I don't care about.
So to unlock the full potential of this phone you really need to root it and flash it. If you're not savvy enough to do that you really should find someone who can do it for you. If you're worried about it being rooted and not getting updates or running some custom ROM you can actually root it, install an official Lenovo ROM that's MUCH better than the one you have, and un-root it. Essentially making it an OEM phone.
I'm really loving this phone but still only 4/5 .. They should have either not shipped it with this much bloat or put on 3GB of RAM. It's a shame they are really forcing customers to do this just to make the phone run at full potential.
Had the phone a few days now. Shipping was crazy; took almost 4 weeks. Initial impressions: Looks awesome (love that yellow!), light weight for it's size, and it's FAST.
For the money you get a lot of horsepower which is really the whole reason I bought it. Did a lot of research and refused to pay $300 for a decent smart phone. This was about the only phone worth considering at a good price with 2GB RAM.
Despite all my research I didn't really understand what I was getting in to. So this is apparently a Chinese phone that's had it's ROM modified to be internationally compatible. I've spent many hours changing settings, looking online how to fix things, and getting it tweaked for use in the USA. It's not a deal breaker, I don't regret buying it, just wish I had known ahead of time.
If you're the type of person who "just wants it to work" and doesn't like tweaking every little thing... would not recommend this phone. If you are tech savvy and don't mind playing around with things or customizing everything then you'll actually enjoy it. I guess this is why your carrier sells you a phone for $300 and you find it online for $150. It's not always the EXACT SAME phone.
That said... man is this thing fast! I can't slow it down! My last phone was sooooooooo slow. This thing I have 20 things running in the background and fire up a CPU / GPU intensive game and it runs smooth.
Here's a quick run-down to "Americanize" it.
- Get a new clock / weather app with widget. The built-in one is totally China centric. I couldn't get it to recognize any American city.
- Fix the clock: Settings > Basic Settings section > Date & Time > UNcheck 'automatic date & time' then set your time and time zone.
- Remove Bejing : Pull down the notification bar from the top. Click on the clock NOT the date! Click on the Clock tab on top. Click Add City at the bottom. Then click on Time Zone Settings on bottom right. Uncheck both Automatic Home Clock & Automatic Timezone. Then manually set your time zone.
- Fix Phone Numbers: Go to Phone > Dialer > Options in the upper right corner > More Features and Settings > More display features > Number match bits > set to "By 7"0
- Turn on 'Location Services: Settings > Basic Settings section > Location Services > flip the switch in the upper right corner.
- Install Chrome: For some reason there's two different browsers installed and they both suck.
- Google Calendar: The one that comes with it is terrible. The Google calendar is 10x better in every way.
- Google Everything: Actually just install Google everything; it's all better than what comes with it. I use Google Photos, Drive, Sheets, Docs, Slides, Calendar, Maps, Gmail, and Good for Enterprise.
Be sure you open everything once before you NEED it. Like, say, the Compass... you have to calibrate it before using it. Most apps have some first time settings and intro. So you don't want to be under pressure somewhere and it's the first time you've opened Google Maps =P
I would have gave it 5 stars if it wasn't a modified ROM.
My latest issue that has rendered the phone useless is phantom touches on the touch screen. It will register frequent randomly placed touches once the screen is on. Sometimes you may be lucky and get a few hours where this doesn't happen but when it does, the phone is unusable. Restarting doesn't appear to help and many on the net have reported similar issues. It appears to be some kind of defect. I would suggest you buy some other phone. This one while a great contender on paper is rubbish.
ALSO - - - Lenovo doesn't honor the Warranty in the US. At first they sent me to the support team which bounced my request around six times till I got frustrated. When I tweeted about their support they sent me this website, saying phones and tablets are not covered under the Interational Warranty service [...]
Rooting is easy and info on how to do it or find someone that will is readily available online, keep in mind that the one click root tools do not function with this phone so don't waste your time or money on those tools.
Biggest concern is with any company that would allow a product that exceeds hardware expectations for a price point leave the factory with truly bad added programs installed. Yes I have attempted to contact Lenovo but still no reply.
