Once you get the drivers and firmware worked out this thing is pretty nice. I'm an IT guy, so this hasn't been too problematic. Worst install was on an X1 Carbon that I'd put back on Win 7 myself from a Win 8 Factory install and had issues with the USB 3 port. I found that this device actually works over the USB port too, just at a reduced performance. This helped me update the firmware and other things before realizing that the Intel software for USB 3 on the X1 is problematic. Can't fault the dock for this one.
Sleek and sexy.
So much USB 3
All the ports you need really unless you need dual DP or HDMI. Dual DVI is fine for my business needs
Had one bad from the factory out of 5 so far.
Have to update drivers and firmware for it to really work.
With a lot of cables plugged into the back, it starts tipping. They did a nice job of side to side stability, but no front to back stability. It doesn't fall over but it definitely tips backwards.
If I had to get one for home and wanted surround sound I'd go with the Dynadock. Also, due to the problems I've had in house with this one I'm going to get a Dynadock U3.0 to see if it works any better.
Not user friendly. This is a freaking dock. It NEEDS to be user friendly. If I get frustrated at times after doing IT work for 13 years then I feel really sorry for home users who get a bad one or are having driver issues.
You'll probably be fine with this dock. Just remember a few things, at least with Win 7.Read more ›
1. Plug everything in
2. Install Lenovo's driver on my X1 (worked at this point, but with some lag)
3. Install the 0A33970 firmware update (fixed most lag)
4. Install Lenovo's USB 3.0 Host driver (no lag at all from this point on)
5. Install DisplayLink's driver over the Lenovo driver
And then for the Surface Pro
6. Install DisplayLink's driver on the Surface Pro
7. Unplug my X1 Carbon and plug in my Surface Pro
And everything just worked. There is a little bit of lag with the Surface Pro, but after using it for a couple hours, it is barely noticeable.
Right now, I have two 24" 1080p DVI monitors, USB keyboard, USB mouse, USB VoIP phone, Ethernet, and speakers plugged into the dock and everything fits together perfectly. I can move between the two computers with no issue, and the swap only takes about 10 seconds to finish.
For those who have tried this combo and had issues, you may want to redownload all the new drivers and firmware and give it another shot.
Been using this daily for a couple months now and I have to say that I am still quite happy with how well this works. I work the kind of job where I switch between the dock at my desk and just the laptop at meetings at least 5 times a day, and the whole setup swaps solidly every time.
