Lenovo 14" ThinkPad X1 Carbon 20FB UltraBook For the average Ultrabook these attributes may sound like a contradiction. But the X1 Carbon is far above average. It features a carbon-fibre reinforced chassis and passes durability tests in extreme environments. A carbon fiber roll cage with reinforcement throughout makes the X1 Carbon Ultrabook ultralight, ultradurable and highly portable. Constructed with satellite-grade carbon fibre, the X1 Carbon is the toughest ThinkPad ever made. In fact, Lenovo performs nearly a dozen separate military-grade specification tests - all under extreme conditions with dust, vibration, heat, cold, altitude, water, humidity, solar radiation, and fungus. You can rely on ThinkPad despite what life throws your way.And of course, the full-sized, backlit keyboard is spill-resistant, as you’d expect from a ThinkPad X1 Carbon. Best-of-breed business-class laptops have always come with their fair share of disappointments. If you wanted performance and a nice display, you had to live with an obese leg-cooker with short battery life. If you wanted long battery life and cool running temps, you had to carry a unit with all of the performance of a three-legged dog in a coma. If you wanted a great laptop with a stellar display and world-class keyboard you had to suffer, because no single manufacturer could give you all three in one unit. For years we've been left praying for the illegitimate offspring of a DELL/HP/Lenovo threesome that was never going to happen.
Well, pray no more my weary fellow road warriors! Lenovo has heard our prayers and come to our rescue!
Enter the NINJA! Whaaaaaaah!
This, the latest Lenovo X1 Carbon -- specifically this HIGHEST-END unit -- has done for laptops what Victoria's Secret has done for granny panties. It has taken the soiled undies of the laptop universe and made them not only sexy, but turned them into something you WANT to use. I LOVE opening the lid and turning this thing on each morning, or on the plane, or in the Sky Club, or just about anywhere and anytime. It's 2.6 pounds of technologically marvelous Nirvana. It's a Ferrari that went to Ninja school in the Arctic Circle, and suffers from chronic Anorexia. A long distance marathoner that will crush your apps and mock you to your face as your eyes and fingers fall off before it hits 50% battery life.
Yeah. It's THAT good.
It's practically lighter-than-air, lasts eight (8) or more hours of USE on a single charge, runs cooler than your body temp, never hangs on any task you throw at it, runs a gorgeous, wide-gamut, color-accurate 1440p MATTE display that can be viewed at the most extreme angles without the slightest distortion of color. Got bright lights right behind you? It's not a problem -- Keep Calm and Road Warrior On! Prefer a Trackpoint over Touchpad? Have no fear, because BOTH are here! Covet a true writer's keyboard that will caress your flanges for hours on end? Look no further, because the X1's keyboard was delivered from heaven by Christopher Latham Sholes himself!
The unit is supposedly built to "Military Specifications" -- whatever that means. It's chassis is a magnesium roll cage surrounded by carbon fiber from the future. The keyboard is completely SEALED against liquid and dust penetration and/or contamination. The three USB ports are all v3.0, so external high speed sticks and SSDs will yield their full performance. It's a very THIN unit that adds so little weight to your carry-on(s) you'll find yourself double-checking that you didn't forget it somewhere. I've taken a number of international flights to the EU and Japan, and have never needed to plug the unit in on any trip. It fits neatly into any seat pocket, and you can use it right on your lap without the slightest discomfort from heat or weight.
If there are any CONS, it would be the lack of a full-sized SD card slot and the AC power adapter seems more like an after-thought. Other than those minor niggles, this thing is a dream come true. Having used BOTH the latest DELL XPS 13 with "Infinity" display and HP's new "Spectre" -- both VERY nice machines -- I can state both conclusively and emphatically that NEITHER hold a candle to this new X1 Carbon -- for the ROAD WARRIOR / BUSINESS USER! Perhaps for the student, or for someone who isn't always on-the-go or on a plane the HP or DELL offer some more desirable features. In my experience, the HEAT that both the HP/DELL units give off, and the inferior battery life, as well as the inferior keyboards on both, make this Lenovo a no-brainer.
For the hotel-dwelling, status-accruing business traveler that gets to see their family one day out of seven, your search is finally over. Just whip out your airline's rewards card and plunk this puppy on there, because when it comes to true business-class laptops, this particular Lenovo X1 Carbon is Charter in a sea of Main Cabin offerings.
Amazon's customer service is great. Although the computer has some minor flaws, and the system cannot be upgraded to Windows10 pro.
In summary, this is still a good shopping experience.
Am figuring our the power settings as it seems the battery is giving four hours on full performance settings. It was only one full charge anyway so I will do a few more charge-discharge cycles and see.
Main thing for me was buying from a seller on amazon marketplace, the article is legit, original packaging , the serial number checks out - I checked the warranty etc on the Lenovo website. It has an international warranty. The plug point is US , a quick cut and replace fixed that for me.
