thin, light, fast. no moving parts, an SSD tailored by Sandisk for the X1C, averaging 38 secs for a 4.52GB file from USB 3.0 SSD to internal SSD. In the other direction, the 4.5GB file transferred back to the external SSD in 24 secs.

I'm writing this as an architect and 20 year veteran of 3D modelling, rendering & animation, primarily with Intergraph/Microstation, IMO, still the standard bearer. Back then, the 3D modelling market was dominated by turnkey solutions, where one bought hardware+software as one product. Intergraph workstations were customized DEC VAX machines running a unix variant with a GUI known as mosaic. The only other player in this market space was SGI, running on DEC VAX, then SUN SPARC, with Alias software on another unix variant known as Isis. Apologies for red-herring, but it serves a point as the X1C's 3D graphics performance is nothing short of extraordinary. Even in comparison to "workstation" class machines with the DDR5 memory bandwidth & OpenGL pro-level graphics cards like the Quadro or FireGL, the X1-C's i5-3427U dual core 1.8GHz w. integrated Intel HD 4000 GPU is surprisingly capable. I used it to conceptualize design of a 28-story building in sketchup, complete with glazing transparency, which was then placed into Google Earth. In short, an evening's worth of 3D-modelling on a 3 lb ultralight laptop sold the design to Client the following day, when I connected it to our conference room's projector. No 6 lb W-series "workstation" class laptop required. The real feat here, IMO, is the level that the integrated GPU has achieved. Up until recently, the death knell for any system being considered for 3D work, Intel has ramped up this on-die GPU (same chip as CPU/FPU & L1 cache).

Bought X1 Carbon last year. Still within warranty, SSD dies out of blue after hybernation. Called the Lenovo service department. Known defect (SSD firmware problem when the drive is about to be full) to Lenovo but they don't fix, only offers to reimage my SSD (that is to wipe out all my data). Was told there is nobody in Lenovo I can talk to about data retrieval. Either pay 2k to data retrieval company, or go to a lawyer for class action. Furious! Anybody knows any recovery solution without being ripped off? Any attorney who might be interested in this?
