Read more Read more	This product has a serious defect By scohen on June 7, 2014 Package Type: Frustration-Free Packaging Verified Purchase So I'm not knocking the e-dealer I bought this from, but I do want them, and anyone considering buying a Lenovo docking station (either the Basic, Ultra or Pro docks) through Amazon to understand that it appears that Amazon and it's dealers have a bad, defective batch of Lenovo Basic/Pro/Ultra Dock docking stations. If you look at the reviews for the Lenovo Ultra Dock, you will see several complaints about a horribly loud buzzing noise coming through external speakers when they are plugged into these model docking stations. It's a defect that for whatever reason, Lenovo hasn't recalled, and instead waits for people to complain about it before replacing it. I bought an Ultra Dock first, had the horrible buzzing issue, returned it and purchased the Pro Dock here, and had the same loud, unacceptable buzzing issue with that. After several rounds of phone calls to Lenovo tech support (nobody there seems to know what the other hand is doing and claimed they'd never heard of any complaints like this despite there already being several here on Amazon at that point in time), they wanted me to ship my laptop to them because they felt it was a systems board issue, and if I wanted them to test the laptop with my Pro Dock I would have to ship that to them separately, which frankly makes no sense whatsoever. How will they know that the two separate items are from the same person to be tested together?! Anyway, I was fortunate that I had a local authorized Lenovo repair center nearby and I decided to use them in hopes that a fix would be faster turnaround time. After they had several rounds of calls with Lenovo, they finally found that the Docking stations of a certain run/generation are all defective and need to be replaced. So they overnighted a replacement and I'm back up and running now, so far without the awful buzzing noise. That said, since this is a public forum, SHAME ON LENOVO for not issuing a total recall of all these defective models. It makes me think a lot less of the company since they are putting the onus on consumers to figure out that this is a manufactures defect, and apparently without issuing a company wide notice about this defect to all tech and customer support. Customers should not have to suffer thrugh endless rounds of telephone calls to hope they can connect with the few people at Lenovo who know this problem exists. Something to be aware of. Apparently the original dock from Lenovo came with a 135W power supply. This was for the W510 + quad-core laptops. Lenovo latter changed to a 175W power supply for the dock. According to Lenovo, there is no difference between the two docs - this change only affected the power supply. The reasoning behind this was that if the doc were fully populated, the 135W power supply would be inadequate. The original 135W dock CAN NOT use the 175W power supply. The 175W power supply plug has two internal ears that prevent it being plugged into the 135W dock - or a lower class laptop for that matter. The reverse is not true, however. The 135W power supply can be used with the 175W dock. I ran this doc with both the 135W and 175W supply and haven't run into issues that I'm aware of. I've since switched back to the 175W power supply that the dock came with. Otherwise, it seems to work fine within the limitations of my operating system. Display port isn't supported by Linux - any Linux - nor are there any near future plans to do so. I can't tell if its the OS or the dock, but I have issues with the USB 3.0 dock port. My Fortress 1TB drive randomly disconnects and locks whether plugged directly into the port or plugged into a hub that's plugged into the port. Whatever this issue is, it only affects the dock port. The same drive works fine plugged directly into the laptop. I suspect there is an incompatibility between the Apricorn Fortress and the dock chip(s). I work from home and needed the ability to hook my Lenovo T530 up to my dual monitors. Plus I occasionally travel and didn't want to deal with too many cables when returning to or leaving my office. Having this dock was an absolute must for me.

My only complaint (and the reason for 4 stars) is that the display port connection is sandwiched between the DVI connector and the power jack. I had to search around for a Display Port to DVI adapter that would fit. I highly recommend getting a 6" dongle-type. A basic adapter just will not fit in here.

This was a great deal

I ordered the dock because I am a college student that is always on the go and use my lenovo for coding and such. I needed a way to quickly plug my laptop up to a larger monitor, printer, etc etc. I LOVE this thing. It literally is as easy as the push of a button. No longer do I need to fumble around pulling all the cords out of my computer when I need to go to class or the library. The time savings alone make this worth it, add in the fact that it takes away the frustration of finding cords and managing a bundle or cables everytime you come back from a long day of class.
INFO:

--It has a digital display port that allows me to plug into my TV in my room as well. (Get the digital display port to HDMI adaptor. 100% worth it.
--It has 6 USB ports and doesn't cover any of the ports on my t510. I was worried it might cover my USB 2.0 which I need.
--Mine came with a key to lock in the computer. Not a big deal for me, but if you use it at a place that is not 100% secure its useful.
--It has a VGA and DVI outputs
--ethernet port
--headphone and microphone ports

Another feature that is very important to me is that it leaves room for fan exhaust. I have seen docking stations at my work that partially block the exhaust! This can lead to overheating especially when running high graphics on a HD monitor.

Shipping:

Mine arrived in two days and it wasn't even the Amazon Prime product. I got mine used, but was well worth the price I paid. It looks brand new.

Caution -- must shift for compatibility with T420s

I purchased this dock for a Lenovo T420s, and the product's description states that it's compatible with that model. But upon first glance, it did not appear to fit. Looking more closely, you must shift the top-left portion to make it compatible. It now appears to be working well.

Overall works great as long as you don't bump it

Overall this works as advertised with no issues and makes connecting my computer to my work setup much easier. My work did not provide docks, so I decided to buy one for myself. My one complaint is that if I bump my desk, it can cause it to come loose which shuts off my monitors, disconnects my USB (and therefore the headset which can be problematic if I'm on a call), and then takes a few seconds to reset. I've mitigated by putting it on the back of my desk where it's harder to bump.

I tried them several times with different devices and the computer did not recognize them. The two dead ports don't charge a phone either. Still, I can work around that. I wanted to replace my obsolete desktop and laptop with a laptop and a docking station. Dell and HP tried to sell me port replicators as docking stations but I wouldn't bite. I finally called Lenovo and they offered the Thinkpad and the Mini Dock Series 3. I bought the Thinkpad from Lenovo but saved over $65 by buying the docking station from Amazon. I have been using it for two months now and it works exactly as I envisioned. My corded mouse, 22 inch monitor, and stereo speaker system are permanently attached (the keyboard is wireless) and the Thinkpad is very easy to attach and remove. I have rated it 4 stars because it is a little flimsy but is fine in its position on my desk. The attachment scheme is ok but weak. My grandson once picked up the laptop and the docking station fell on the floor.

Once again, the Mini Dock does exactly what I wanted and I am very pleased with it.

I'm used to having laptop docks from the workplace, so I knew exactly what to expect in terms of convenience and features. I bought this unit secondhand, which was a great discount. It was in excellent cosmetic condition and works just as good as new, so why not?

Basically, I bought this because I don't want to connect *5* cables every time I use my laptop at my desk. I actually connected these cables manually before: Video signal, USB wireless receiver, audio cable, power cable, Ethernet (faster than Wi-Fi). Now all connect all these peripherals to the dock and just plop down the laptop.
