Yes they're clunky. For their size they have a big bezel around the screen, are a little heavier than you would expect and aren't as thin as some. This is a little over 3 pounds. But on the flip side of the coin, they can take a beating. They have a strong frame and are rough-and-tumble ready. They're military spec--whatever that means. I give the Yoga 11e to my kids. Cheap laptops don't often stand up to abuse and the Yoga 11e really does.
The screen is low resolution, but if it were higher resolution everything on the screen would be even smaller. I don't want high resolution on a small laptop like this. It's IPS so it has good viewing angles. The touch works well in laptop or tablet mode.
The processor isn't very powerful. It's not the type of laptop that you open a ton of windows and programs at one time. I think it's perfectly usable for web, Netflix, Word, etc. My kids play Minecraft on it and don't complain. It doesn't come with Microsoft Office. The second generation with the Core-M processor is a good bit faster but it's about $400 on Amazon today. There is a i3 version of the 3rd gen, but I've not seen it inexpensive.
Everything else is good too. I like the keyboard, but it's not backlit. The touchpad is ok but I prefer physical buttons. The speakers are pretty good. You get two USB, an SD card slot, an HDMI out, a wired internet port, and a rectangular power cord port. Both USB are third generation. The 720p webcam is ok but nothing special. The power button is on the side so you can reach it in tablet mode and is one of those you have to hold for a second or two for it to turn on. The battery life is great. I've not timed it, but I would assume we get 8-10 hours out of it. The 128GB SSD won't win any speed awards, but it's a lot faster than a spinning disk and in a convertible you need a drive that can be moved around. The drive is much faster than the previous generation Yoga 11e.
These aren't hard to open up. Something like 7 screws on the bottom panel and it pops up. There's only one ram slot and I think the hard drive is the M.2 format. I've been trying to remember if this one is still 2.5 SATA or not and I really think the Gen 3 is M.2 (I'll try to check one during the day). The M.2 drive would make this more expensive to upgrade the drive.
Now the 3rd gen 11e was $250 on prime day, but that wasn't the convertible Yoga version with the touchscreen. That 11e (not Yoga 11e) had 8GB of ram, but the rest of the specs are the same as this. I don't think the 8GB of ram made much of a difference when the processor is really the limitation. I think I've paid $350 for the same configuration that's on sale today and that was a sale price. At the deal of the day price, this is a good price.
I like these Yoga 11e. It won't win style awards, but there's nothing uglier than a stylish laptop in a pile of broken plastic. This is a tough little laptop/tablet that will survive to be used again tomorrow.
This is a laptop/tab Christmas present for my daughter who is in college. Immediately after we opened it, we allowed all of the Windows updates to be done and then we went back and did the Lenovo updates which included the Synaptics driver. Worked great. Then 12/28 Microsoft pushed one of its forced updates.
Everything on the PC worked except the sound. Neither the speakers nor the earphone jack would work. Not on mute and up 100%. We rolled back the Windows update. Still no success. We reloaded the newest Lenovo drivers. No success. Ran a full hardware diagnostic from Lenovo. No problems indicated. Have gone all over forums and found no solution.
Basically we have a silent PC and a ticket in with Lenovo. BTW - not sure what gives, but Lenovo shows warranty is about 1/3rd through, with a purchase date of 8/22. Given that I didn't purchase this from Amazon until 12/10, there is something REALLY amiss here. Amazon? You filled the order; you have some 'splainin' to do. This was ordered as a new 3rd generation (which is what the box says); not a refurb.
Maybe someone has a helpful hint?
UPDATE: It really is a defect issue. Using HDMI I can connect to TV and it will pump out sound no problem. Lenovo has responded and will send a box to send it off for warranty repair. Still no explanation why they say so much of the warranty is already out when it shouldn't be. Everyone can get a lemon now and then, but it is how it is handled after the fact that will determine whether this will remain at one star or move up more.
ADDITIONAL UPDATE: Lenovo Warranty Service was quick to send a box and fix. It was a hardware failure. I still do not know if they have corrected the warranty period yet. So I can't give it four stars. Really about 2.5 stars.
FINAL UPDATE: Sound card went out again. Clearly they have a product integrity issue as this had to be replaced before.
UPDATE: So I went to Lenovo and download their service bridge/system update software. After doing that, it identified there were zero critical, six recommended and five relevant system updates. One was BIOS update. Several were sound and graphics related. One was for the blue screen of death issue when going to tablet mode. I updated all eleven and had to reboot a time or two for a couple of the fixes. After completion, this is a new laptop! My example amazon load of 10 to 15 seconds is now more like 2 to 4 seconds. So Im going from I don't like it, up to I like it. Nice and easy form factor for grabbing while on the go.
