Just using common sense training (click and reward) to teach my 11 month old, 40lb boxer mix to touch the pad to get the treat on the other side of the glass door, she learned it in less than an hour. It's easy for her to understand how to make it work.
The pad is big enough for her paw, she doesn't send it flying when she touches it, it has rubber feet to keep it in place.
That was Sunday. Today is Tuesday, and this evening she has already rung it on her own three times because she wanted to go outside (to see the kitty, but we'll continue working on WHY to go outside). Some reviews complained that the paws stopped working after a couple of years. If this lasts me 2 years and helps me train my dog to let us know when she wants to go out, that's quite alright with me. The 3-star average review is misleading, especially when compared with other products.
The transmitter -> receiver reception has a little to be desired. The product says that they can be 100 ft apart. If ours is more than 10 feet apart it doesn't work ( no chime). If the transmitter/receiver are around a corner/outside a door/or too far apart (10 ft) this system didn't work for us. We thought of returning it but then found a work around where we placed the chime next to the door (since it is loud enough to be heard throughout) and the paw at the door. In this set up, we can put the paw outside so that our pooch can tell us she needs to come inside without scratching. Thank you for that!!
The bell can be set to a chime that does "woof woof" or to a "ding dong". -In the video it is set to "woof woof".
It is very sad to leave the house and hear the doorbell "woof woof" behind me, as if to say "but I want to go too!" The only thing I would change about it is...well...my dog not pressing it so much! Sometimes I'm a lazy bum that just doesn't want to go outside! So, if you are looking for an exercise plan, this may be your new best friend.
