Leo the Late Bloomer Board book – February 20, 1998

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 878 ratings

This heartwarming story of how a little tiger named Leo bloomed is told by bestselling author Robert Kraus and is accompanied by the wonderfully bold illustrations of Jose Aruego.

“Captivating and rollicking.” The Horn Book

Leo isn't reading, or writing, or drawing, or even speaking, and his father is concerned. But Leo's mother isn't. She knows her son will do all those things, and more, when he's ready.

With its message of patience and humor, Leo the Late Bloomer is more timely than ever. As Children's Books and Their Creators commented: "Leo's reassuring 'I made it!' at the end delights young listeners who may have been scrutinized for early blooming by well-intentioned moms and dads. Deserves space on any parenting shelf."

In a world in which every middle class parent worries if their child isn't top notch in everything, this book is a beautiful classic to remind us all to relax. I collect children's books, and my husband suggested this one, as he loved it as a child. When I got it, I loved it immediately. It assures children and parents that people progress at different levels, but everybody blooms. My husband was a very small child, shorter than everyone in his class, and this book brought him comfort and encouraged him in what he was good at. About 20 or 25 years later, he's a self-confident, very socially adept doctor! I remember struggling very much in kindergarten and first grade with everything from cutting to skipping to math to reading. Everything clicked for me around 2nd or 3rd grade, and school became a breeze after that. I became self-assured, and successful. I wish I'd had this book when I was struggling with those things... I might have been more confident from the start!

For the reviewer concerned that parents would delay help for their children, I doubt a kid's book would have that effect. Parents can tell when something is wrong, and one children's book is going to sway them from taking action!

Oh, and the big bonus... the illustrations are darling, and classic 1970's renderings. The words are absolutely heartwarming!

I bought this for my son many years ago because he was small for his age. I now bought it for my grandson who seems to be a late talker. The family tradition with Leo continues.

Great book for any kid. I got this book for my son because he's one of the youngest kids in his class and he's still having a bit of a hard time catching up with everybody else. This book helps give him the idea that you don't have to be like everyone else you will come into your own. That is exactly what every child needs to know that they are going to be okay my son was having a really hard time in school because he didn't understand why he wasn't getting certain things that the other kids were since we got this book we read it regularly and he knows like Leo the Tiger he's going to bloom he's going to become him he's going to be able to do all those things and his friends can do it's just going to take him a little bit more time and that's okay there's nothing wrong with taking your time. This should be like a required classroom reading that all teachers should have to read to kindergarteners. This way they understand they don't have to rush and there's nothing wrong with taking your time if you don't get it you keep trying that's all not everybody does everything at the same time. The most inspiring part is the end and my son loves it cuz he can read that line to me without any problems or hesitation or help

This is a book that all children will enjoy. I used to read it to elementary school students in my library. It is a fun story that also helps children to understand that not everyone “blooms” at the same time and every one blooms in their own way. This message, while meant for all children, is especially helpful for children who have delayed development for any reason. Highly recommended!

I used this with my second grade class to help them to understand that we don't all learn at the same pace. In these days of total classroom inclusion, it is very important for young students to learn to accept all styles of learners, and to know that what may come easily to them may not to others. I revisit this book when it seems the class may be forgetting the important lesson of kindness it teaches, and I remind them of Leo when they tell another child "This is easy!" when the other is struggling. It would also be a great book for parents of special needs children to remind them that they will indeed, bloom.

I got this book 30+ years ago in kindergarten, signed by the illustrator, and have always loved the message it gave. We all grow and mature at different times in our lives. I read this to my older daughter who was just like Leo, she did things in her own time. She has also found a love for this book like me. My daughter picked this book out as a favorite to help start our new nephew’s library. I can’t say enough good things about this book.

What a disappointment this book is. Rs.400 for a 32 page book with one sentence on each page. Might be suitable for 3-4 year olds. Product categorisation of 4-8 years is clearly misleading.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love Leo
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 10, 2010
"Leo the Late Bloomer" was a book both my children read and enjoyed when they were little. My son had difficulty processing visual-spatial information and was clumsy - lots of spills and a few quite nasty accidental injuries. I am pleased to report that he survived childhood, self esteem intact, has an interesting job he loves and is good at and has even achieved obtaining his driving licence at the age of 40.

So when my friend Sarah asked me to recommend a book for her son, now aged four, who seems dyspraxic (very clumsy) and is beginning to realise he is different, I had no hesitation in recommending Leo. I was surprised that I remembered that befuddled lion from all from all those years ago when he brought us delight. But Leo is truly unforgettable so he sprang instantly to mind.

I bought "Leo the Late Bloomer" as a surprise gift for Sarah and have heard that he is a big hit with a wee boy from a new generation of readers.

I highly recommend Leo for all children and especially those with a mild developmental delay. My favourite line, addressed to Leo's anxiously hovering parents is "A watched bloomer never blooms." And in his own good time Leo does in fact bloom. Just like my lovely son.
