I first heard Leon running around East Texas -years later I realized the guy working with so many of my favorite groups and the one on stage with Joe Cocker was the same Leon Russell and I thought this guy is beyond genius-his arrangements-his keyboard work and his style-In recent years we managed to book him twice in this music club we had and I had the privilege of talking with him and then i got to escort him to the stage-he was having trouble walking at the time and I was there to help him-but he had no trouble playing-an 85 minute set that rocked -without a break- giving to the audience the best as he always has. There had been some local doubters about whether "at his age" and "can he still do it?" They were either converted or swept away. It was like when we were walking to the stage he was supposed to use this cart if he had trouble walking and he pushed it away and the he leaned on my shoulder fro a step and then said "hell I can do this on my own. I told him that I thought so since I was almost as old as he was and I had been listening to him since the Texas days and as long as he would play I would keep listening and loving it. He said Alright then -I'll just have to keep playing.
