Disclaimer: I've been buying Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide almost every year for decades!!
I've used it to make up my extensive (100's of movies) list of Movies I Want to Watch/Buy, as well as to reread reviews of movies I've seen many times, and will probably watch again!
But this year's edition has fallen short!
I know, one's personal opinion is formed by one's personal tastes and predilections.
Having just now received my copy (For the 1st time, I bought the larger-size volume, as my eyesight isn't what it used to be!!), I tore open the book, seeking Maltin's opinions on my favorite movies of 2012.
So I looked for "Elena Undone", "A Perfect Ending" "The Undefeated" (the Sarah Palin career bio from 2011), and "Fast Girls", the spirited British flick about a British girl's track relay team.
NONE of my 4 current favorite movies are in this 1644 page tome!!
NONE of them!!
Neither is "Kiss Me", a Swedish film from 2012, nor "28 Hotel Rooms", or "After Fall, Winter" (the sequel to "Fall", which is ALSO not in this book!!!).
Well, I'm sure all of us can find movies we love in this book.
I know I can......1000's of them!!
But it's those great (IMHO) ones which are missing that made me cut my usual FIVE star rating down to "just" four!!

This historic reference book is sadly losing its relevance in today's world of IMDB, Wikipedia, Rotten Tomatoes, and many other movie sites. When Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide was first published in 1969, its thousands of capsule movie reviews were an indispensable reference source when such a comprehensive collection of movie info was rare. The book had its biggest success during the 80s and 90s, when home video sales exploded and movie fans couldn't get enough of renting and buying movies and learning more about them. Many copycat movie guides were also published, but Maltin's book had always remained the benchmark. When multimedia PCs gained popularity in the 90s, Maltin again capitalized on the new technology by teaming up with Microsoft to create an electronic version of his book, Cinemania CD-ROM, which also included Roger Ebert's movie guide and several other movie books, all with fully-searchable text and cross-reference links. It seemed Maltin's Book was poised to transition successfully to the new electronic age. But sadly, that was not to be. In the early days of IMDB and Wikipedia, if you were to tell me that a site that gets info primarily from volunteer online users would one day be more useful than Maltin's book, I would laugh at you. But that's exactly what has happened. As IMDB and Wikipedia grew bigger and bigger, it became apparent that the team of experts who edit Maltin's book would never be able to contribute as much as the millions and millions of volunteers (from movie professionals to regular viewers) who contributed for IMDB and Wiki. Even though errors can occur on IMDB and Wiki, but if an entry has been edited millions of times, the errors are bound to be corrected eventually.Read more ›

I know its impossible to keep adding titles without eliminating, but so irritating when you look up a title that was once there and now no longer is not. I know I should have saved ALL my old volumes. DISSAPOINTED.

Maltin's new edition is both as thorough and maddening as all the previous editions. Alas, there are so few independent films listed - perhaps he foresaw the change in format on the Sundance Channel. Frankly, to create more room in such an all-encompassing book, he should reduce all the reviews rated BOMB to a brief, single sentence. Think of the room he could free up!

I've been buying Maltin's Movie Guides since the Martin & Porter guides have been discontinued. M&P not only had great reviews, but included the reason for the MPAA rating, a guide to stars' and directors' movies.
So this is the best I've found out there. (I still have the last M&P guide. It's falling apart, but still usable!)

I just received this movie guide. My local library is excellent and always gets the latest DVDs of new movies. I was thrilled to find that the last three DVDs I borrowed were in Leonard Maltin's 2014 Movie Guide. I realize that the guide has to drop some older movies to make room as the guide as a limit to its size. I try to purchase this guide every year. If you are interested in movies, this guide is indispensable.

I've been using this guide for I-don't-know-how-many years, but the shortcomings have become too much to overlook. The Index of Stars is inadequate, missing too many significant actors. There is no Index of Directors. I don't mind not agreeing with reviews, even when they are totally off base (Taxi Driver), but when I read for a tenth or twentieth time that a film is overlong, I come to believe that the problem is not with the film but with the reviewer's attention span.

I'm going to try VideoHound for a year or two.

As a film buff, I cannot live without Leonard's yearly review book. Much better than any other capsule review books in that his tastes are similar to mine and he is tough on mediocre and bad films. I cannot believe how many hours this book has saved me in avoiding bad films.
