It's bigger and heavier than I expected it to be (over a foot long and wide), but it was beautifully done and the size helps to portray Leonardo da Vinci's art on a larger perspective than a standard-sized book could ever hope to capture.
I attended a traveling show on Leonardo machines and I saw this book there for $200 with a curious little sticker on the plastic wrap that said "Updated with the latest scholarly references'. I brought it home and much to my susprise, I found that this book was available again on Amazon for $130. I also discovered a 25th aniversary edition of the same title. The 25th aniversary edition is just a shrunken version of this beheamoth. About 1/3 of the size. You find all kinds of page number differences between the volumes/editions. Dont be fooled. The 25th and the 2004 editions have the same content and the 2012 edition even has the same number of pages but with updated pictures and text. Turns out this edition, that is available right now, has the same ISBN # as the previous 2004 edition but does not show a publish date of 2012. Confused?
Dont be. This is THE latest BOOK you want and it is fabulous! I am blown away and astounded at this collection. I cant express my grattitude enough to the publisher, for supplying me with such a beautiful, expanded, detailed copies of this man's work. thank you Tashen and Mr. Zollner

a) There is an almost obsessional preoccupation with extreme close-ups. One double page shows just a nose and lips. Another double page shows the head of Cecilia Gallerani on the left leaf, with part of her head running in to the centre valley, and the right leaf shows nothing at all. On the other hand Leonardo's divine sketch 'Study for the head of a girl 1483' which could easily have been shown actual size, is presented like a postage stamp.
b) This is a really giant size book, like a pulpit bible, and on the text pages there are vast areas of blank white paper, yet the printing point size is very small. Being a 'senior' this means I have to use strong reading glasses which simply puts me off reading the text at all. In a book this size and stature I find this an unacceptable failure of graphic design so for me this is a case of 'so near yet so far'. You may well think me harsh and unkind, and for the Leonardo lover this is great value for money, and I understand the paperback edition is presented in a more handleable 2 volume edition, which I now wish I had ordered. Is this is so please enlighten me.
c) I would only say, before you slag me off as I'm sure you'd like to, I'm a trained designer and a registered Architect and am very accustomed to being vilified for the shortcomings of my work, so I feel no remorse for passing on the benefit of my feelings to this forum.
The book contains ( well you probably know ) his paintings, scientific work and drawings with a number of items. Such as pencils and charcoal.
You can see the book is complete in every way by the inclusion of ' doodles.' ( a lot of you haven't the faintest idea what I am on about have you? Well, you know when you are on the phone ( well, that is when you had to stay in one place and not have a ' Hands free ' you would stand/sit and draw the strangest things on a writing pad ( well I doodled.) These are sometimes turned into a number of beautiful pictures.
I have never seen a book like this. You can tell because I have ended up writing a load of strange sh**.
I am just unable to explain the incredible beauty of this book.
( And I did not even mention the information given in the book. But you have probably fell asleep by now or jumped off the roof )
Absolutely Amazing Art, Beauty and knowledge.
It has all of his paintings and some discussion of them, as well as drawings ranging from anatomy to architecture to landscapes.
