Leonardo da Vinci is recognized as the quintessential Renaissance Man. A great painter, he was equally prodigious in the fields of architecture, engineering, anatomy, and physical science.

H. Anna Suh has a master's degree in art and archaeology from Princeton University. She was on the curatorial staff of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and has worked on projects for scholarly publications at the Met, New York University's Institute of Fine Arts, the Princeton University Art Museum, and Harvard University. She lives in New York City.

This is a great book that I had been looking forward to getting for a while. The images and writting is good, although a bit hard to understand at times. The ONLY problem I have with this book that gets it a 4 out of 5 stars for me is the fact that it is so tall and wide. Granted it makes looking at the pictures much easier but it also makes storage of this book MUCH harder. The book is to tall to stand on any but the top shelf on all of my book shelfs and it is so wide that it protudes from the edge of the shelf.

Don't let this distract you from getting this book however. It's detailed pictures are wonderful considering the orginal size of the works and the translations help with the reading. There's a section for each catagory, such as anatomy and lighting, which really helps if you want to look at certain types of works. The greatness of these pictures will have you looking at each page for hours, just to see all the details.

I would suggest this book for anyone from an art lover to a history fanatic. I use it as a reference book for one of my drawing classes. It's a great buy for anyone and everyone.

Great way to get several of Leonardo's notes all in one place. This book focuses on the writings - there are pictures too, but don't expect a picture for everything in the book because they aren't the focus. It can sometimes be difficult to match up the writings with some of the pictures, though I guess this isn't really avoidable. I also bought a separate book that focuses on the pictures, and between the two I am pretty happy.
I realize the man left behind something like 6,000 pages of drawings and notes (and who knows how much else lost to time), so it's almost impossible to get all of the notes in one volume and this book does a pretty good job of selecting interesting comments. There are a few things I found myself wishing for here and there, though some of it could be more personal preference than objective omissions.
I got this in paperback style, and it is bound fairly well. I do see the pages eventually falling out if I were to read it a lot but not right away.

When I first purchased this book, I was looking for Leonardo's drawings, sketches and art studies. For this, the book is fair and has a nice collection of his drawings, even though I wish they were bigger and the printing on paper more vivid. But what really surprised me on this book was his writings on several subjects. Some of his studies on anatomy, perspective, light/shade and his vision on art itself were priceless. Its nice to see a little bit on how this great artist thought. Its also nice to see how persistent and dedicated he was as an artist and how he suggests an artist to go through his studies:

"If you wish to have a sound knowledge of the forms of subjects begin with the details of them and do not go on to the second step till you have the first well fixed in memory and in practice. And if you do otherwise you will throw away your time, or certainly greatly prolong your studies"

So, if you wish to purchase this book, only for its images, you would do a better deal, purchasing "Leonardo da Vinci: The Complete Paintings and Drawings" from Taschen. But, if you wish to read his notes on several of his drawings, this is the book to purchase.

This is a beautiful look at the genius that is Leonardo. The reproductions are beautiful and clear. The quotes from Leonardo are well translated and significant. This is a book for anyone wanting to dig deeper into the thoughts of Leonardo.

I'm not trying to stir controversy, but after looking closely at the Vetruvian Man and other work in this book which assert the Golden Ratio in the human body, it is beyond me how anyone can believe that there was not a Designer behind it. Now whether that Designer used DNA, evolution or created our bodies from the dust is beyond me, but our bodies are a living miracle.

In spite of belief or lack of it, this is an inspirational book from one of the greatest minds of all time.

I purchased this book to further explore Da Vinci's concepts of beauty and aesthetics, particularly on beauty of the human face. As a facial plastic and cosmetic surgeon, I'm constantly seeking to learn more about our concepts facial beauty across various cultures. Da Vinci's notes on the ideal facial proportions was enlightening. After reading this chapter, it's no secret why he was a master of his crafts as a painter and sculptor. He was able to recreate beauty observed in nature because he understand how divine proportions fit together.
The reproductions of his original of his original notes in sepia tone was quite good and made reading this book very enjoyable. Definitely a soon-to-be classic for coffee tables and my cosmetic surgery reception room.

The book has a library-style dust jacket, and is both a great reference for art students and a beautiful coffee table book. Skip the smaller format books and go for something useful. Here are some PROS / CONS I've noticed after using it for a while (hopefully they help you, and save you some time!)

PROS:
-It tells you a bit about each sketch. It's not a simple slide show.
-The colors are great (though not brilliant), and the book is the perfect size for carrying (see picture along side Leonardo's book and a regular size pen)

CONS:
-the pictures can be pixelated at times
