About the Author

Leonardo da Vinci is recognized as the quintessential Renaissance Man. A great painter, he was equally prodigious in the fields of architecture, engineering, anatomy, and physical science.

H. Anna Suh has a master's degree in art and archaeology from Princeton University. She was on the curatorial staff of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and has worked on projects for scholarly publications at the Met, New York University's Institute of Fine Arts, the Princeton University Art Museum, and Harvard University. She lives in New York City.

Very Good Selection of Writings

When I first purchased this book, I was looking for Leonardo's drawings, sketches and art studies. For this, the book is fair and has a nice collection of his drawings, even though I wish they were bigger and the printing on paper more vivid. But what really surprised me on this book was his writings on several subjects. Some of his studies on anatomy, perspective, light/shade and his vision on art itself were priceless. Its nice to see a little bit on how this great artist thought. Its also nice to see how persistent and dedicated he was as an artist and how he suggests an artist to go through his studies:

"If you wish to have a sound knowledge of the forms of subjects begin with the details of them and do not go on to the second step till you have the first well fixed in memory and in practice. And if you do otherwise you will throw away your time, or certainly greatly prolong your studies"

So, if you wish to purchase this book, only for its images, you would do a better deal, purchasing "Leonardo da Vinci: The Complete Paintings and Drawings" from Taschen. But, if you wish to read his notes on several of his drawings, this is the book to purchase.

Sure it's not the complete works; however, you can find them in most college libraries. This is a handy personal collection with excellent quality reproductions of the illustrations.

I am so glad I got this book. Don't be fooled by the odd high prices, this is a $40 book, it's printed on the sleeve, so I don't know why so many people are posting it for $100+, there is something wrong here. I got my NEW book for $20 a few days ago, this is not an old book, so it's not like a rare find. Amazon needs to correct the price of this book back down to retail $40, like it has printed on the inside front leaf. Anyhow, it's a great book and shows so much more about Da Vinci than my other book that only talks about his paintings. GREAT book for your shelf.

Wow. This is an awesome glimpse of history. This man was a genius. This was very well put together. To know what this man knew in the era he lived in, people must have thought him to be completely nuts. There are some disturbing thoughts as well, but he was incredible. Being an artist I was amazed at the abilities he had. He made up stories in his mind of what people was thinking in The Last Supper painting. I haven't read through the whole book yet, but I am impressed with what I read so far. I'd recommend this to anyone.

This object (more than a book) is so beautiful, interesting, substantial, and accessible. Do you want to do this right? An author (person) I admire unqualifiedly (don't know him personally, ummm qualified?) who is soooo well learned, insightful, and articulate, is in a state of complete admiration of Di Vinci...and in his usual articulation, explains why in his book...Fritjof Capra, The Science of Leonardo...buy both, read the Capra, then you will appteciate that you have this amazing piece...enjoy
