Lesbian and Gay Parents and Their Children: Research on the Family Life Cycle (Contemporary Perspectives on Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Psychology) 1st Edition, Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 13 ratings

The past several decades have seen increasing controversies over lesbian and gay parenthood. More same-sex couples than ever are becoming parents, building their families while others debate their legal rights pertaining to marriage and parenthood. Against this sociopolitical backdrop, how do same-sex couples transition to parenthood, and what are their experiences as parents? Furthermore, what are the experiences of their children?

Lesbian and Gay Parents and Their Children: Research on the Family Life Cycle provides a comprehensive overview of the research on same-sex parenthood, exploring ways in which lesbian and gay parents resist, accommodate, and transform fundamental notions of gender, parenting, and family. The book takes a family life cycle approach, beginning with research on how same-sex couples meet and build healthy relationships, then describing how and why same-sex couples decide to have children and how they grapple with the changing roles each partner must adopt. Their experiences raising children through young adulthood are explored, including the challenges of interacting with their children's schools and teachers. In the end, the book considers the perspectives of the children themselves—as young adults and adults speak out about their experiences having lesbian or gay parents.

Integrating both qualitative and quantitative research, this book incorporates a range of disciplines, including psychology, sociology, sexuality/gender studies, and human development. It also highlights understudied aspects of same-sex parenting, such as termination of couple relationships.

With practical recommendations in every chapter, this book is an indispensable resource for those who research lesbian and gay mental health and family issues, as well as those who provide services to lesbian and gay parents and parents-to-be.

I absolutely love this book to bits, both for the writing style and for the quality of its content. Lesbian and Gay Parents has an entertaining style to read and each chapter is thoroughly introduced with adequate context. I cannot empahsise enough how easy to read each of these sections are. You can read this book piecemeal or from cover to cover. This is a book that supports lesbian and gay rights (LGBTI rights more broadly are mentioned but the research is sparser) but it is solidly based on what science has found, not on what politics says should be. If it's possible to have a crush on a book, I certainly have one.

You don't need any particular background in science to read this book because the usefulness and context of the research is clearly explained. I'd recommend it not just to those who have an interest in LGBTI issues but to anybody who is a member of a family - because this book not only talks about how these minority families are different but also the ways in which all families are alike.

"The family," writes Dr. Abbie Goldberg, "is the principal context in which human development takes place...." It's a straight-forward statement which usually describes a family dynamic headed by a parental unit that identifies as straight - the colloquial term for heterosexual. But what if the parental unit is lesbian or gay? Are they still a family? And who exactly makes up a family?

Those questions form the heart of this book as Goldberg explores the gay and lesbian experience in parenting children. And while the marriage equality movement adopted the slogan that "love makes a family," from a sociopolitical and legal perspective, public policy defines a family and accords it rights and privileges based on an accepted construct.

So, who constructs the construct of family? Goldberg notes that biological parenthood is "fundamentally gendered." Yet, how straight people and gay and lesbian people build their families isn't all that different except - and this is the big exception - gay and lesbian couples can not procreate with their partner. The idea of traditional conception within a fundamentally gendered family, whether or not conception actually takes place, has generally been the reinforcing construct of family across the societal spectrum.

Goldberg's research doesn't need to challenge this conception of family since it is a valid construct. Rather, through life narratives (qualitative) and statistical comparisons (quantitative), her research shows that human development within a gay and lesbian family reality is a parallel and sustainable construct, too. This is an important work that will help policy makers in every discipline embrace new notions of the human family.

As a grandparent of two children being raised by a lesbian daughter and her partner, I was looking for information about what issues and problems the children may encounter in the future. Dr. Goldberg has done an excellent job of covering the research in this area. She also covered other aspects of gay and lesbian relationships that I found very enlightening. I especially liked the conclusions and recommendation summary at the end of each chapter as well as practical resource recommendations.

This book should be required reading for anyone in a position to make policy decisions affecting gay and lesbian couples.

My husband and I are working with an adoption agency to create a family. Dr. Goldberg's important research on gay parents and their children is conveyed here so expertly that we contacted her to take part in her study, the Transition to Adoptive Parenthood Project (TAPP). It was heartening to read real data, free of emotion, showing how children of gay parents thrive.

This appears to be a most complete and concise reporting and analysis on a very timely, "hot" topic. Kudos to the author for her thorough research and sensitive explication of the subject. This book is suitable for the academic community but equally for all parents, especially those of school age children, regardless of sexual preference.
