Less Than a Gentleman by Kerrelyn Sparks
Historical Series Book Two
Matthias Murray Thomas has a lot on his shoulders. Fighting for freedom with a price on his head, protecting his mother and his plantation and now he has a fiery redhead who does not take orders...at all. And she thinks he’s a butler.

Caroline Munro has been through a lot in her life so far. Now at twenty-six it has fallen on her shoulders to protect her very pregnant sister and her niece and nephew. The war rages on as the redcoats invade more territory and take what they want. If she has to pretend to be someone else for them to have food and shelter in the huge plantation home, that is what she’ll do.

This story is full of adventure, danger and romance. The truth of the war brings sadness, but in her usual way the author brings humor into the story. We first met Caroline in the first book The Forbidden Lady, as a young fifteen year old who had a loose tongue at the worst times. She may be older, but her tongue is still a bit out of control. The excellent story telling from Kerrelyn’s Love at Stake series is continued in both historical books.

What a great story of love and war. it's set in the late 1700's and Kerrelyn Sparks does a great job of creating a wonderful story about the fight for freedom adding such charismatic characters. Matthias is fighting for freedom and stays away from his home because his mother is constantly matchmaking to find him a wife. He is too busy with the war for a wife plus all the women are interested in is his plantation and money. Caroline and her pregnant sister along with her sister's two small children are a casualty of the war and on the move trying to find their father. They happen along the home of Matthias mother and seek shelter. Ms. Jane takes them at first thinking Caroline was someone she had sent for as a bride for Matthias. Caroline plays along at first for shelter and safety for her sister and the children. The story is funny...charming and has danger because of the war. I really enjoyed the relationship between Caroline and Matthias and how they did what they had to to protect the ones they love. I love Kerrelyn Sparks and even though this is completely different from what I normally read of hers but what she did with this story was amazing. Highly recommend.

Less Than a Gentleman takes place in South Carolina during the Revolutionary War as the British were making their way through the countryside taking whatever they wished. I have not read a historical set in this time period for many years and I definitely enjoyed the change.

Captain Matthias Murray Thomas was held by the British for a short while and with help, his group escapes, he meets up with a Scotsman named Jamie Munro, a major in the army who is worried about his daughters, Virginia Stanton and Caroline Munro. He asks Matt to keep an eye out for them and to send word if he sees them.

The sisters have been walking and hiding from the British in the countryside for several days. They finally come across a large home and seek help for the two kids, Charlotte and Edward and the very pregnant Virginia. Jane, the woman of the house quickly brings them in, at first thinking Caroline is another neighbor, she quickly realizes her mistake but she is desperate to marry off her son and takes a liking to the little family so keeps the ruse going.

Jane is Matt's mother and lives at Loblolly Plantation with a few remaining servants but she is lonely and although Matt comes home to visit and check on her, he leaves each night to go back to his troops in the woods. When he meets the sisters he wants to know what Caroline is up to so he pretends he is the butler, Haversham. Matt realizes Caroline is Munro's daughters and is intrigued by her but because she refuses to fall for anyone who is a soldier he keeps his identity a secret from her.

The danger heats up along with Matt and Caroline's attraction as the British camp out at the house. There is spying, secrets and a baby!

Matthias Thomas is a colonial fighting against the English; when he is able to return to his home for a short visit, he finds that his mother has taken in two young women and two children. One of the women has given a false identity. Matt's mother had initially believed the woman to be Agatha Ludlow, a woman that she had invited there with the intention of getting her son to marry. With a pregnant sister, soon to deliver, and her niece and nephew in tow, no place to live and fleeing the war, Virginia Munro goes along with the new identity. At least until Matt comes home; he immediately knows that the woman is not Agatha as he met Agatha previously. When he confronts his mother, she tells him that she has already discovered that fact, but she likes Virginia and knows that she needs assistance; besides she notes her son's interest in Virginia and thinks that she just might be the right woman for her son.
