Departing from the usual inspirational-aphorisms-and-workbook-exercises approach, former Berrett-Koehler president Decker offers a fictionalist workplace minidrama, complete with family demands, blindsides and backstabs by colleagues, and pressures from above and below on the corporate ladder. Written almost completely in dialogue, the story centers on Bee Natural, a small candle company recently acquired by a corporate parent that has installed a new CEO, who is contemplating taking the company into wax-relaxed beauty products. The story features Dana, the lifer marketing director whose conduct seems to be not completely under her control; her new assistant, Nikki, an enabling veteran of Overeaters Anonymous; sales director Matt Parker, with whom Dana "shares" Nikki; and Todd Ramos, who is spearheading the new product line. A corporate reporter following the companys transition and off-site friends and family round things out. Their charged interactions will be familiar to anyone who has worked anywhere near a cubicle, headset or corner office; if the dialogue feels aggressive and banal, it also feels true-to-life. Perhaps most compellingly, Decker never steps in to tell readers what to think of the often poor decision-making of the various characters, though he does offer an appendix of "discussion questions." If behavior modification comes from self-recognition, identifying with one or more of Deckers nuanced stand-ins may be a first step.

While president and publisher of Berrett-Koehler Communications, Charles Decker pioneered an innovative program of shorter works designed for organizational development, training, and human resources. A former senior executive at Amazon.com, Decker is also a past director of the Executive Program book club. He also writes the monthly Readers' Choice column for Fast Company magazine. He is currently vice president for client and partner relations for Acumentum, Inc., an electronic publishing company, and does extensive consulting work with business publishing initiatives.

If you like simplistic fables, this is for you

While this is loosely based on the transition that occurred at Burt's Bees as it changed from a candle company to a beauty products business, the transformation of the simplistic straw woman at the center of the fable seemed unlikely. I dislike overly dumbed-down stories. Why do fable writers choose not to use contractions?

Some sentiments ring true, but in general this smacks of the unbelievable. Skip it or get it from the library. Fish! is more believable and a better read.

Should be a Best Seller.

I think the publishers of this book should create a new dust jacket, change a few pages at the start of the book and take a run at the best seller list with this as a novel. It's really written that well.

Meet Dana Carswell, an old timer with a twenty year old candle company, a teenaged son at home (I could say troubled relationship, but with a teenaged son that goes without saying), and starting out a Monday morning of what promises to be Hell Week. The company has just been bought out and the new president tells her they are thinking of going into the personal care business. "With beeswax," Dana answers.

Dana is just one of the five different characters as they adjust to new jobs, unfamiliar products, perceived threats and unclear loyalties and the brash new CEO who wants to forge a new path to greatness.

Every once in a while one of these little books comes along that while having a lot of fun while opening whole new trains of thought. Wonderful.

Charles Decker is vice president of an electronic publishing company, does work with business publishing initiatives, and has coauthored Beans: Four Principles for Running a Business in Good Times or Bad. Lessons from the Hive is about a fictionalized organization that is reinventing itself and was created to teach positive ways of viewing changes in an organization, how to deal with fears of the unknown, the importance of trust, and how to deal with conflicting interpersonal relationships. It is of the business-fable genre that uses a week-in the-life approach for five players in an organization including a recently installed CEO, a newly hired employee, and a seasoned director of marketing with personal struggles at home and at work. The junior change agent uses mantras many people call clichés such as Happiness is a choice; Inspire yourself, others will follow; Vanity is not a team sport; Enthusiasm will take you 90 percent of the way; and Change your thinking, change your life. This book can be used in classrooms and in businesses. Many people learn better by stories and examples than by other methods. This is a brief but powerful message. There are questions at the back of the book to assist reflection about each chapter.

Much better than "Beans"...

I have been a fan of this author since I read his excellent motivational book "Beans". This one is even better, as it has more believable characters, a story that anyone who has gone through organizational change will recognize, and a real plan for dealing with it (change).

One of the mysteries is that there is a self-help book at the center of this one that seems to have made a huge difference in at least two of the characters' lives. I don't know why the author doesn't name it, but it must be truly life-changing.

I used this book with my little team of nurses (the questions at the end of each chapter are excellent for sparking discussion) and even the most jaded among us seemed to recognize something the characters are doing that they reflect and that they could alter. It really is about "change your thinking, change your life." It seems like such a simple concept but hardly anybody recognizes it. Bravo for bringing it home so brilliantly!

Perfect gift for employees surviving change

When a company or industry is in major flux, sometimes, as a manager, you may find that your toughest assignment is convincing your team to embrace the new way. Even you might not be certain the change makes sense. But you've got to get the word out. Sometimes a book comes along that says it for you... and serves the role of helping others see that they can either be the barriers or the leaders of necessary change. Lessons from the Hive is that book. Never preachy, filled with realistic human conflict...and a cast of characters that reflects us at our best and worst when the inevitability of change strikes. You'll breeze through it...but the characters and examples will stick with you for a long time.

I loved virtually every chapter of this book. Just when you think it's going to be a "feel better" book that's totally unreflective of business realities as we know them, the author pulls a pleasant surprise. For those who think they've "got a ping" on business change, you might want to check this book out. I think everyone will find something of use here.

The story is everything

For books like this to work, they have to have both an engaging storyline and real-world characters. This book has both, and I found myself re-learning a lot about dealing with change, managing difficult people, and understanding how different types of people have different styles of working. The group discussion questions in the back are particularly useful. I will probably suggest that my whole department get copies and read it together. There are some on my team who need a little coaching, and this is a very non-threatening way to deal with difficult issues. Great job!
