After seeing a video of the author sharing wisdom from a third grade dropout in a commencement address, I immediately bought the book and read it. Since I have several hundred books already on my Kindle, I don't usually add new books unless they're free. But I was so impacted by the speech that I couldn't wait to read the book. That demonstrated the theme of the book--make an impact rather than an impression.

The book didn't have quite as much impact as the live speech, but I wasn't disappointed. Rick Rigsby learned how to stand firm from his father, a third grade dropout who manifested character and integrity. The wisdom of his father's generation has been lost in later generations, and the author wants everyone to have the common sense--and above all, the common decency--that he learned from his father's word and example.

I'm only a generation younger than his father, and I was raised with the same values by wise parents who exhibited utmost integrity and character. Everything the author wrote resonated with my own experience. How much better our society would be if younger people learned this wisdom.

I like many others listened to the speech Dr. Rigsby gave before reading the book. What I found interesting was that Dr. Rigsby wrote a book about common sense that has failed in the current generations. The book spoke on lessons and understandings that I was raised on as well though I was an 80s child. Perhaps because my upbringing happened in Eastern Europe is why at 35, I connect with the older generations more then the younger ones. Knowing the value of hard work. The only real downside to the book was that it wasn’t written as a story but as a speech. And speeches are hard to really penetrate in book form. I would have wished for this book to really go into his background with his father maybe even chronologically as opposed to jumping from different timelines. But that’s just a personal preference. Would recommend for anyone to read.

I happened to hear Dr. Rigsby one Sunday morning and he immediately became my all-time favorite speaker. The audience sat spellbound as this master communicator shared lessons he had learned from his dad. The story does not translate as well in written form as when you can actually hear Dr Rigsby share. However, the lessons shared in this book are timeless and much needd for every generation. I believe every high school, college student and young professional needs to make time to read this book. The rest of us can benefit as well.

Well that was disappointing. He gave the most inspirational speech and I thought the book the speech was based on would be great, but it’s just not the same. Maybe he’s developed his speech a bit since the book came out, but I truly did not get the same engagement like I did hearing him speak and the points he put across in his speech. I knew he was a Minister, so it could be overly religious, but again it wasn’t the same as the speech he gave that he’s famous for. I’m disappointed because I’ve wanted to read this book for ages and it just didn’t live up to my expectations. It’s a really short book, and yet I struggled to get through it. It was like being preached at at church. I get taking wisdoms from elders, but they don’t all have the best track record. It just wasn’t for me. I really wish I hadn’t bought the book and just stuck to his speech on YouTube. I also found it very American, and didn’t understand any of the references he uses because I don’t know any of the American people listed. It was really hard to connect with what he was saying. There are some good points and some good quotes used that I will take away, but again I think I will get my wisdom from his Uni commencement speech
