"Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress"
Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? Cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, and instead, follow the data: In seventy-five jaw-dropping graphs, Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise. This book is everything. The emotions you feel when reading is something spectacular. Not every author can evoke so many feelings. I was so scared to read this, because I just knew it would break my heart.
I want a love like Owen and Zoë. I think everyone should be lucky enough to experience it. There is so much more I want to say about this book, but I don’t want to give anything away. Just please go read this!
Zoe loves her best friend Owen, has loved him for years, but she's been holding back, because Zoe's also been keeping secrets for years - tragic secrets, horrible secrets - secrets that make it hard for her to love anyone, but especially Owen. Zoe needs to find forgiveness or let Owen go - because between her love for him and the need to pull away at the same time is only getting worse.
Owen can't understand why Zoe keeps pushing him away - he loves her - has always loved her but something changed in their friendship - something changed between them and even though he knows she cares about him too - there's some invisible wall between them. If he can't figure out what it is and break through, any future for them will be doomed.
But when all the secrets are out and the truths are revealed - will these two be able to work through it all and find happiness? Can they surpass the past and let go of the ghosts haunting them? Will Zoe and Owen conquer all or will they find themselves lost to the memories?
Briana Pacheco brings all the feels with this story - no it's not always happy times and good feelings - but you will be pulled right in, your heart will twist and break alongside the characters, but you'll also find hope and love and so much more. This is a story about love overcoming - but it's also a story about finding yourself, letting go of blame and the things you thought you knew. It's everything all at once and nothing at all and how it all builds up and releases. It's drowning in your sorrows while trying desperately to cling to the life raft you have found in your one person.
