Editorial Reviews

Let Me Get By is the third studio album from Tedeschi Trucks Band, featuring ten new, original songs that stand together as a testament to the spirit and commitment of the tightly-knit 12-member ensemble. Driven by Susan's soaring, spiritually charged vocals and Derek's masterfully lyrical slide-guitar, the band's musical talents are on display in full force. From 'Anyhow' - a declaration of devotion highlighting the album's theme of breaking away - to the funky and uplifting title track, Let Me Get By delivers a sonic journey filled with the barnstorming energy, soulful vibes and roots-based rock that no band delivers better.

Deluxe version includes 8-track bonus disc that features live recordings from the legendary Beacon Theatre in New York as well as alternate mixes, early song takes and additional studio material, an expanded booklet with exclusive studio and live photos, and a custom-designed vintage amp box.

There are some artists that just have to be experienced live to be truly appreciated. Like Widespread Panic, Tedeschi Trucks Band is just such and act. At least that's what I thought until I heard TTB's latest studio album Let Me Get By.

Don't get me wrong, the band's first two studio efforts, Revelator and Made up Mind are very good, certainly worth owning, but I always prefered the live Everybody's Talkin'. It just brought me back to the two times I've been lucky enough to see the band perform. There's something truly amazing about watching an 11-piece band, this one led by the husband-and-wife duo of Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, perform like one well-oiled maching on stage.

At it's best, Tedeschi Trucks Band is a perfect mix of The Allman Brothers and Sly & The Family Stone with Susan's powerful voice and Derek's virtuoso slide guitar playing make both those bands just a jumping off point. Performing live TTB offers an almost Springsteen-like Rock ’n Roll revival meeting. The first two studio albums fell just short of capturing that. Each provided songs that become amazing when stretched out and played live.

Let Me Get By captures that feeling in the studio. The band, joined by guitarist Doyle Bramhall II, produced 10 original songs. "Don't Know What It Means" is one of the highlights. The lead-off number "Anyhow" and the title track are also stellar. These and other songs from Let Me Get By will be great when I get to see them performed live, but I don't have to imagine it, they're great now.

This is the third studio album by the 12-piece Tedeschi Trucks Band, formed when the bands of husband and wife Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi merged in 2010 with a mission of performing original songs. It's this commitment to new material that occasionally proves difficult, together with the demands of arranging for a 12-piece band and incorporating all the band's musical interests - soul, blues, jazz, gospel, world music etc. Their first album 'Revelator' was a masterpiece, their second album 'Made up Mind' was good but not quite as good as the first and the live album showed that although they are primarily a wonderful live band they are prone to jam-band excesses.

The lead track here "Anyhow" is a nice moody soul ballad that has a subdued start but slowly builds, with Susan's vocals excellent as usual and Derek adding subtle slide guitar. More nice slide on the mid-tempo funk of both "Laugh About it" and "Don't Know What it Means", the latter which features a nice catchy Stevie Wonder-esque chorus. So far, the songs are much like what the band has previously done but "Right on Time" is a real departure - very jazzy and very dramatic, featuring both Susan and Mike Mattison on vocals, with period-sounding brass and Derek on dobro. The title track is built around a tricky slide/organ figure, a bit prog-rock, but with Susan's soulful voice always pulling it back to reality. "Just as Strange" is another departure - laid-back semi-acoustic country/gospel, while "Crying Over You / Swamp Raga for Hozapfel, Lefebvre, Flute and Harmonium" (catchy title!

I've been critical of the last two TTB recordings. Live they are a tour de force, but when I get home or go out in the car, it's "Songlines" or "Already Free" that I reach for every time. Imagine the big grin when I played this latest CD then. Susan's singing is a little less strained and it is all the more appealing for all that. Many of these tracks could easily have been on "Already Free". The last track on the 2nd CD of the "Deluxe Edition" ("Keep on Growing") is flat out Dicky Betts / Jessica. Mike Mattison makes an oh-so welcome return to stage centre. There's just enough of that wonderful guitar to guild the performance without taking over the song. Excellent horns. Even if you have never encountered TTB, buy this CD and then make every effort to see them live. The songs are eclectic which was not so much the case on "Made Up Mind". Highly recommended then.

Best album, best group out there right now. Well worth the wait and the price. Excellent vocals, excellent guitar work (Derek is amazing), excellent band work, fantastic arrangements. Can't wait for their next album.

I have been a fan of Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks since the 1990's when they had their own bands and, of course with TTB. That may seem like a source of bias. It isn't. As much as I have loved all of their other work, this album represents one more evolution. It is remarkable for several reasons. First, the TTB genre continues to be indeterminate. They cover so much ground musically. This album is somewhat less far reaching, but it is more varied than most current music. The album is powerful, nuanced, and beautiful. A clear theme of this album like all their work is that TTB honors those that have come before them, while pushing into new, wonderful realms.

It seems like Derek steps back from the front of the sound and lets the band come through. But make no mistake, his guitar work is incredible, but in a much more nuanced way as part of the ensemble. Susan also shares the vocals more than their other work. Again, her voice is incredible but the other vocalists shine. I can speculate that keeping a band this talented across the stage is very difficult and maybe this album helps do that. Regardless, it sounds great and I can hardly wait to see them again in concert. The evolution that this album represents confirms for me that this is one of the finest ensemble bands - ever.
