"So: now I come to speak. At last. I will tell you all I know...." These are the words of Ophelia at the beginning of this short novel: literally her words, in that her narrative is composed entirely of the vocabulary she is allotted in Hamlet. Within these meagre resources, she manages to express herself on topics including her love for her father (Polonius), her care for her younger brother (Laertes), her puzzlement in the face of the Prince himself, and her increasing sense that she must escape the fate awaiting her in the play. This is no mere technical exercise or prequel to the play: the use of such a restricted vocabulary means that Ophelia's voice, while direct and passionate, gains musical qualities as words keep recurring in perpetually changing contexts. Paul Griffiths, born in Bridgend, Wales, is a well-known writer on contemporary and classical music.

This is an amazing piece of work. I think you have to know "Hamlet" quite well. This novella is like a reinterpretation of the original. There are many changes and surprises and additional elements - yet the central essential character of Ophelia is unchanged. This is a highly original piece of work and immensely rewarding. I am halfway through my third reading but feel I am still making discoveries. This novella is just the halfway stage in the double transformation of "Hamlet" to this piece - and then the further change from this piece to the music by Hans Abrahamsen that has the same title. In that music there are further developments into another medium. And yet the whole transformation hangs together in an exciting and convincing way

It's beyond me. Not being familiar with Ophelia I could not follow the story, if there is one. I can see that the writing is poetic, the layout too. The volume feels so good - with visual and tactile appeal - but for me, a disappointment. I bought it because of Abrahamsen 's "Let me tell you" song cycle - but the book is on its way to the charity shop. I hope some literary cove will appreciate it.
