About the author

David Gaughran was born in Ireland but now lives in a quaint little fishing village in Portugal, although this hasn't increased the amount of time he spends outside the house. He writes historical fiction and science fiction under another name, has helped thousands of authors publish their work through his workshops, blog, and writers' books - Let's Get Digital, Strangers to Superfans, BookBub Ads Expert, and Amazon Decoded - and has also created giant marketing campaigns for some of the biggest self-publishers on the planet. He’s likeable. His advice is honest, often humble, and practical in a way that doesn’t send a writer off the rails trying to do the impossible.
In fact, he’s very good at explaining why all the BS advice you’ll hear from nearly everyone else is only good if you like wasting time freaking out over things that aren’t going to make you money, get you real paying fans, or make you happy (this is my personal summary statement, but it stands).
I bought this book with zero interest in the topic -because I enjoy David’s blog- only to find myself rapturously highlighting entire pages (I’m actually a very stingy highlighter), because even though I already know he’s right, and I have already figured out a lot of this stuff for myself, his conversational, informative dialogue engages me as he humbly, but not melodramatically, tells me how he did it wrong, then explains how he turned it all around, accepted responsibility, and then did it right.
He’s a very rare man. Most of the books you read are full of what I can only call ‘not the facts’ - really, I have don’t follow up sleuthing. It’s amazingly easy to determine the quality of writing advice simply by having a look at their content. Yes: content. You should key in on that word. Should I hightlight it?
David consistently follows up by pointing to more (well organized) articles nestled away on his site, which I find myself really enjoying, as well as very exact links to his favorite services and tools, which I think some people thought were contrived overboard marketing devices; clearly you’ve got no talent for marketing, stranger who slaps David in the face with such clueless accusations. I can assure you, as someone who’s eternally curious about writers apps, services, reads far too many so called books that really are nothing more than bad marketing schemes, and so on and so forth, that David’s links and suggestions are right on target, legitimate options. His recommendations are not too many, not arbitrary, and while I usually choose to pick different services and tools, I still feel he’s making some good recommendations.
And yes David, I would use Book Funnel (what idiot wouldn’t though, right?).
And hey! I’d never even heard of Author.email until he mentioned it to me. Yes! I’m very interested in that service now. All thanks to David. No one else has ever mentioned it. Can you say ‘paying attention?’ David is definitely paying attention. He even updates his advice routinely - thus why this is a fourth edition book you’re ogling - it’s a good read.
David is sensible yet relaxing, smart yet humble, logical yet conversational - if you want to study someone who’s made all the mistakes, and gotten his act together in a load of charming ways, he’s a great guy to pay attention to.
Every time I grab one of his books, open a chapter, read a post on his blog, click a link to more content he’s written, I think ‘oh, I’m really not interested in this subject... but I love the way he communicates, so I’ll just check it out’, only to find that I am very interested in what he has to say. There’s literally no throwaways in any of his content. It’s always an engaging read.
I tend to walk away from my time with David wearing a refreshed perspective, bearing a calmer, happier, attitude toward my writing career, gnawing on some good nuggets of advice.
He has a way of quietly sweeping out all my mental clutter, leaving me content, full of a calm confidence, awake with a new clarity and a sense that life as a writer can be pleasant again, with a goodie bag of freshly upgraded ideas in my arms.
I’m highly likely to buy the rest of his books as well (okay, I already have it on my to do list for next month’s budget), even though, once again, I’m not interested in the topics, but I know I’ll read every page, fully engaged, happy to get some good advice from my virtual friend, once again.
Thanks David.
I owe you one.
It's buried amidst rather a lot of self-promotion.
Tends to expand on explanations w-a-y too much and take several paragraphs to explain what could be conveyed in a short sentence.
An odd predilection to use 'she' when 'they' would be more logical...?
Too much - to me anyway - 'chatting' to the reader.
There's - understandably perhaps - rather a lot of emphasis on author's self-promoting (blog, mailing list, website, etc.) --- I may be out of step, but: don't take a lot of notice about the author - more on price and reviews.
STILL - if you can wade through all the padding, there's some gems to help you write and publish.
Also, it stands out to me that he prioritizes helping fellow authors/supporting his community. It is wonderful to see someone truly care about other people (and not just money, though income is important to us all!)
