If you’ve been to Europe a few times, it’s easy to think that a book of travel writing would have nothing to teach you. Cheap eats? A bit of socio-cultural history? I loved this book; read it cover-to-cover during a recent Monday Night Football game. I bought the book after I had read the author’s hilarious article about her – an American millennial’s - first visit to one of Berlin’s co-ed saunas in the online magazine TheLocal. The author is a recent Washington, DC, transplant, who moved to Berlin earlier this year. The “sauna article” is chapter 10 in her first book available only in kindle format. The book’s other 9 chapters are just as funny and self-deprecatingly honest. Having lived half my life in Germany and the other half in the US, I could really relate to the author’s wonderful and insightful depiction of the different German, and especially “Berlin ways”. The book is a great read especially for non-Germans considering moving to Berlin. I have made Guzik’s short book required reading for my US students in a graduate course which is built around a one-week trip to Europe, with Berlin the highlight of the trip. I could not think of a more perfect read for the flight from Washington to Berlin.

Guzik’s first book is an entertaining romp through her travels through Berlin. With sharp humor and even sharper observation, she guides us through everything from the mundane, to the bizarre in the daylight and darkness of Berlin’s urban jungle.

Points where she extends beyond the observational to focus on more universal themes, shine brightest. “Let’s Take Berlin” is a poignant essay, not just on the nature of attraction in a new city, but a meditation on how even fleeting romances can leave traces on our lives and emotions forever.

A delightful and thought-provoking read, I thoroughly enjoyed having Guzik as my tour guide through this fascinating city.

Really enjoyed the read! It was light and very entertaining and made me laugh quite a few times. As an expat myself, after 2.5 years in Berlin, I can say Jessica has a keen eye for the small details that make this city so unique. Interspersed with stories of personal development and self-discovery, the book nicely combines light travel guide style insights into Berlin with the bigger questions that everyone will probably ask themselves at some point in their life. Pick up the book and take the journey!
