Letters to Eloise
"This book is funny, witty, and emotional, with an ending I didn't see coming right until the last few pages. It really gave me a lump in my throat." Amazon review.
Letters to Eloise is the warm, witty and heart-wrenching debut epistolary novel by Emily Williams; a love story of misunderstandings, loss, and betrayal but ultimately the incredible bond between mother and child.
‘Receiving a hand written letter is something that always puts a smile on my face, no matter who the sender is.’ Flora Tierney.
When post-graduate student Flora falls unexpectedly pregnant during her final year studies she hits a huge predicament; continue a recent affair with her handsome but mysterious lecturer who dazzles her with love letters taken from the ancient tale of ‘Abelard and Heloise’, or chase after the past with her estranged first love? But will either man be there to support her during the turmoil ahead?
‘Banish me, therefore, for ever from your heart’, Abelard to Heloise.
Emily Williams lives by the seaside in West Sussex with her family and a large menagerie of small pets. After graduating from Sussex University with a BA in Psychology, Emily trained as a primary school teacher and teaches in a local school. The story jumps from the past to the present a lot, which takes a little getting used to. I don't want to give the story away, so I'll sum it up as a bittersweet love story and a heartwarming tale of a young woman preparing to be a mother. Her connection to her unborn child through the letters is very touching.
The prologue raised a whole host of questions that hung around in my mind until the answers started to reveal themselves.
I loved getting to know Flora, she was an interesting character who wrote letters to her unborn child whilst she was pregnant. I loved this idea, it got me thinking about what I would have said to my children before they were born. The letters were a joy to read, containing information on how Flora felt on each particular day, what was happening in her day-to-day life and also what stage the baby was at. There were so many pregnancy reminders for me, some that made me miss being pregnant and others that made me glad I'll never be pregnant again!
Flora's love life was a little complicated and I enjoyed learning more about the men in her life, even if they weren't always perfect.
As I neared the end I felt an overwhelming sense of sadness but I couldn't quite put my finger on the reason why. Then the emotional truth became clear and I shattered. The tears just wouldn't stop and I read the last pages through blurred vision. It was so unexpectedly heartbreaking.
Letters to Eloise was an absolute gem of a read - beautifully written and so utterly touching. This is a story that will stay with me for a long time. I seriously can't recommend it enough!
However, this is not a sad tale but a tender one of love, friendships, relationships, family and so, so much more. This has the makings of a very top bestseller and would transfer onto the big screen so perfectly - it would be the box office hit of the year.
It is a book which everyone should be reading imho and it is certainly one I shall never forget. I wish that Amazon had an advanced review scheme, where I could perhaps award this ten extra large rainbow stars - it is, without doubt, such a read as deserves the biggest accolade the reading world has to offer. Emily, you should be so proud of your masterpiece, and I want to be top of your list to read the next one please!
I am hugely grateful to author Emily Williams for her offer to read and review this one - in exchange, this is my honest and unbiased review.
