In 1826 the famous novelist and poet Sir Walter Scott entered an economic policy debate. Adopting a pseudonym, his Letters … from Malachi Malagrowther, Esq., on the Proposed Change of Currency fiercely defended the Scottish banking system from a British government proposal to ban banknotes under five pounds. Malagrowther built cogently on Adam Smith’s explanation of how the voluntary substitution of paper banknotes for specie in circulation enhances an economy’s stock of productive capital. The Letters ignited Scottish public opinion, and the government decided to exempt Scotland from the small note ban.

About the author

I am a professor of economics at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. My latest book, Better Money: Gold, Fiat, or Bitcoin? asks and answers the question of which monetary standard will best deliver the kind of stable-valued money people want. My previous book, The Clash of Economic Ideas, combines my interests in economic history and the history of economic thought. My earlier books have discussed the theory and history of free banking, central banking, the gold standard, and fiat money. I have been teaching for thirty-one years, including stints at New York University, the University of Georgia, and the University of Missouri - St. Louis, before moving to my current position in 2009. My wife is Neera K. Badhwar, a philosophy professor emerita.
In 2023, I will be doing podcast interviews and giving talks across the United States and Europe to promote Better Money. Search "Lawrence H. White" on youtube.com to sample earlier presentations I've given on money and banking topics. I recently debated the well-known economist Frederick Mishkin on markets versus government in the provision of money: https://www.cato.org/multimedia/media-highlights-tv/lawrence-h-white-participates-soho-forum-debate-replacing-federal.
