His approach is very scholarly and well-researched. This is no surprise; for almost twenty years Dr White engaged in personal evangelism amongst Mormons in Salt Lake City, engaging in discussions and handing out tracts. He estimates the number of conversations he's had to be in the realm of 5,000. He knows his subject exceptionally well.
However, in spite of the many problems and contradictions White amasses in his critique of Mormonism, his tone remains one of personal concern and outreach, never becoming scathing or mocking of Mormons or their beliefs. White lets the evidence and citations from Mormon 'apostles' and presidents speak for themselves, rather than labouring points in his own words. White also includes a few diagrams when covering the Trinity and the role of justification and works, helping to demonstrate the reformed position. The fact that the book is written as to a Mormon believer no doubt helped facilitate this winsome, user-friendly approach.
Another strength of the book is that White not only critiques Mormon theology, but presents the reformed protestant position also. I think this is something easily overlooked in Mormon criticism - it is one thing to encourage Mormons to turn away from LDS beliefs, but another, equally important thing to point them toward the orthodox Jesus of the Bible.
