Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Given the opportunity to write letters to everyone who ever mattered in your life, who would you choose? What would you say? In this day of e-mails and I-Ms, does anyone even write letters anymore? Masumoto does, notably in the form of regular columns for the Fresno Bee, where he has followed the advice of an editor who once told him that writing a good newspaper column was like writing a letter to a friend. And so Masumoto has written letters not only to childhood pals and forgotten neighbors but also to the long-dead grandparents who immigrated from Japan to California's Central Valley to establish the farm that Masumoto now runs, and to the father who taught him how to do just that. They are letters of revelation and regret, of advice and affirmation, of gratitude and grief, all imbued with Masumoto's eloquent appreciation for the land and its stewards. Lusciously complemented by Hansen's elegant watercolor illustrations, this simple volume explores life's complexities, one letter at a time. Carol Haggas

Review

''Mas Masumoto's honest and poetic voice informs the reader gently but emphatically about the values we need to create a sustainable society.''--Alice Waters, executive chef and owner, Chez Panisse

''Written in the form of casual letters from a farmer to members of his family, these finely crafted pieces capture the rhythms of life and work in an orchard, and the interweaving of family and farm over three generations. Masumoto stands in the rich American tradition of agrarians who wield their pens as brilliantly as their farm implements. Letters to the Valley is a delight.'' --Michael Pollan, author of The Botany of Desire

Excellent very personal approach to life in the San Jaquine Valley. The art work integrated into the letters made the book even more enjoyable.

Through letters to his dad, neighbors, friends and sons, Mas Masumoto has show us a glimps of organic farm life in California. Farm life is hard, long hours during harvest seasons under the hot Valley sun, in return, it gives little financial rewards. What makes Mas choose such hard way of life: the family tradition, a good harvest after hard labor, memory of good, delicious, mouth watering sun crest peaches, the smell of his father's shirt, or the values that he will pass on to his sons. I am not sure, but I sure taste the sweet, delicious sun crest peach and feel the joy after seeing people savoring his labor of love.

After reading this book and other books from Mas, I feel the urge to shop more organic products and help out local farmers. This is a good read for us city folks who never experience the hard life of farming and wish we also have memories of good delicious fruits picked at the perfect time, not riped from a truck.

I grew up in the San Joaquin Valley where my family also farmed. So much of this book spoke to my memories of that rich and productive area. Those of us tied to the soil have a deep respect for farming and David Mas Masumoto certainly paints that picture for all to read.
