Cons: Thin pages
On September 22nd, 2015 I decided to order this journal. I was in the market for one and had my heart set on one from the "White Lines" series, but couldn't see paying extra for shipping since it isn't readily available in the US. This journal was the next closest thing, and I received it on September 24th; two days after as promised by Amazon Prime.
My first impression upon unboxing was that it is a very simple journal; pleasing to the eye. I hate when there is a glaringly obvious label on the front or back, but Leuchtturm has placed a small and unremarkable stamp on the back cover. It is the small details that make this journal appealing. The journal lies somewhat flat when opened to the middle, and they have included two cloth bookmarks attached, as well as labels for the outside. I am an organizational junkie and this thoughtful touch really pleased me.
Throughout the course of the day, I decided to test multiple pens on the pages. The pages are very soft and thin, and as expected, when I used my favorite pen there was quite a bit of bleed-through. I also had an issue when I closed the journal as the ink had not yet dried and left smears across the opposite page. However, when I began to use gel pens, I had no bleed-through, but I was still left waiting a minute or so before closing this journal. As you can see in the attached photos, there is still a visible shadow of the ink when you flip the page, but not enough to interfere with my writing.
Despite this flaw in the formulation of the pages themselves, the journal itself holds up quite well to wear and tear. My purse is a vortex of doom that has mutilated many journals in the past, and yet this one has held up remarkably well. The pictures I am attaching have been taken after almost a month of abuse in my purse.
If you're someone who needs to take notes in a hurry, I would not recommend this journal as the ink will smear extremely easily, but if you're willing to take the extra minute to let it dry, this journal is very beautiful and well crafted externally and will travel with you.
The notebook also has an elastic holder and a page ribbon so I can turn directly to my next blank page.
The only negative for me is the cost. I wish it was less expensive, but it is a high quality notebook, and because I like the notebook and my system works so well, I am willing to pay it.
One last thing. After you finish with the notebook, it has stickers in side that you can put on the outside of the notebook to create a description on the spine for it to go to the bookshelf and for you to locate it later.
I do like the index - but I find that I don't use it much. I can see how it would be useful, maybe to identify which ink was used on which page, for instance. There is a date at the top outer edge of each page and numbers on the bottom....neither of those bother me nor make me excited, but they're there so I'll just remark on them. Again, something I could see other people having a use for, but not myself.
I am not well versed in high end stationary items - this is all I know.
The one complaint is bleedthrough - it makes a journal almost unwritable if you prefer to write with fountain.
Please correct me if I'm wrong! I cold be doing it wrong.
Quality product, maybe worth the price if you care about journals. Very "artisan" feel to it.
I have used a Pilot G-2 as my regular writing utensil for years and rarely have a problem with smudged writing. I appreciate some may suggest to try another pen. However, I would rather find another notebook that I can feel confident will accept any pen I put to it and not allow for smudging. Great product just not good for left handed writers.
