Outside of this, the notebook is great, I use a fine point Sharpie pen as my writing instrument of choice and although you can see writing through the opposite side of the page, it doesn't bleed through.
Everything else about this notebook I love, but the fact that the binding came loose, I can't give it higher than 3 stars. I'll post pictures.
Update : 16 Feb 2014.
I felt compelled to update this review and add another star because I absolutely love this notebook! Although the binding did come apart at first, it has held up like a champ after a few months of solid use. I abuse notebooks, they are not hipster accessories to me. I will not go back to Moleskines, I see no reason to. I underestimated how much I appreciate the dots even, they provide guidance so that my notes are not all over place, but are not in the way as to be distracting. Very happy with this notebook!
I was very underwhelmed when I opened the notebook. Not sure what I was expecting, but the paper quality seemed fair at best. The paper is extremely thin. I have several planners (I've used MAMBI's Happy Planner, the moleskin pocket calendar, Staples ARC, Levenger Circa and Franklin planners) & inexpensive journals and all have thicker paper than this notebook. Actually, a cheap college ruled notebook will have thicker paper than this notebook. I have pain in my hands & the paper is so thin it is actually very painful to turn & handle. This does not happen with thicker paper planners.
I tried 2 different gel pens and as you can see in the photos the both bleed thru and feather. I don't have this issue with cheaper notebooks. The moleskin has ghosting but not bleed thru with the same pens. I am using Pilot G-2 0.7 and Papermate Ink Joy 0.7, both with the same bad results.
I don't think I will be using this notebook & I'm disappointed to have spent so much on it.
The structure of the book is very similar to the Moleskine notebooks. The pages of this book are about 3/4 inch wider than the comparably sized Moleskine. The paper used the the pages is very smooth and quite thin. There are 249 numbered pages and the Leuchtturm notebook, including covers, is only 0.8 inches thick. The paper feels strong.
Even though the pages are thin, I don't see a lot of the images on the page beneath. I have only been drawing on one side of the pages, but both only because it is my preference, not a necessity. I've used gels and felt-tip pens and have not had any trouble with the inks bleeding through.
The dots on the pages are easily visible, but don't detract from the sketches because the dots are tiny. I'm not sure if the dots are black or dark grey because they are too small for me to tell for certain.
There are two ribbons for marking locations in the book. The Table of Contents at the front of the book is also available and each page is numbered in the lower, outer corner of the page. An elastic band is anchored to the back cover and easily stretches around the front to secure the pages closes.
I've found that I enjoy using these pages for other drawings besides just the graphic shapes. Pens flow smoothly across the surface, but the paper takes pencil as well.
This red colored notebook shipped from the U.K. so it took almost two weeks to get to me. It might be something to keep in mind if needed quickly. I believe some of the other colors were available more quickly. For me, it was worth the wait. I'll just need to plan ahead as this book is filled.
Update 6/22/2016: Added scanned image from page. You can tell from the page number that I labelled this up side down. The scan shows the dots and how fine they are.
(They're very light and non-intrusive.) All these notebooks have page numbers, AND a blank table of contents page, which is the best idea ever.
Also has the standard pocket in the back, and a ribbon page marker. I am addicted to them. For anyone who keeps a journal or needs a notebook for any other reason -- these are a must-have. You won't understand until you have one.
