This stopper doesn't do it. To the contrary, after you close a bottle with this stopper, you can just pull the whole stopper out the bottle even while the lever is in the sealed position. I.e., the bottle is not sealed. And I'm not mighty mouse. I'm retired and go to the gym once or twice a week for light workouts.
Years back, stoppers like these had bottoms that twisted to make them larger or smaller. That way, you could change the size of the stopper to closely match the bottle opening and tightly seal bottoms of different sizes. Not these babies, though.
For wine, I've gone back to tapered corks, which seal fine and are easy to insert or extract with a light pull. For carbonated beverages, I now only buy bottles with twist tops and seal them up again. I keep a few extra assorted tops to replace ones that I lose. Either method is cheaper and more effective than this item.
These stoppers are designed to be a little looser in the wine bottle, but it does not allow wine to escape and tighter in the champagne bottle, and is necessary as the gas pressure would force the stopper out, if not tight. I tested these in both types of bottles to be sure. I would have been happy with two or three of these, but at this price, I'll never run out.
Update August 2013: Well I've had these now for over 4 years and haven't broken any of them. They still work great. Over time the rubber will probably harden and I'll likely just buy another set but for now no need to do so. If you use a little downward pressure as I suggested before you work the lever you should have no problems. I use them primarily on glass wine bottles and if I don't finish the bottle I use one of these caps and put the wine bottle back in the refrigerator and lay it on its side. It doesn't leak. Wouldn't however recommend these for something under pressure such as soda.
Will be buying more, I'm sure....starting to run low.
