I hate to follow the crowd with my reading choices so I was slow to try the expanse series. Now I know better. This was a good read. If you get past nit-picking the technological and astrophysics details, then you can settle back and enjoy the ride. The pace really makes this work. I watched the first couple of episodes of the TV series and hesitated to read the books because I was not interested in reading about palace intrigues and politicking. I'm glad that I finally bit the bullet and bought the book because the authors - it's actually two - do a great job weaving the politics into the plot without dragging out the story. I did like the characters and though the detective was particularly interesting. But overall, the pacing is just well done. If you want engaging material, then look no further. I bought this as a Kindle special and bought the 2nd book in the series at full price as soon as I finished this one. I'd call it a great space opera but it all takes place in our solar system, so maybe it's more accurate to call it great "solar opera." Whatever you call it, it's a great epic tale.

I was worried about starting this book after watching the show on SyFy. I thought the show would be one big spoiler for the book. Well the show is great and so is the book. I knew basically were it was going but the book expands on the show in great and beautiful detail. I learned more about the characters and their motivations. As well as more details about the over arching politics of the solar system. I am excited to start the next book.

Since it seems like George R.R. Martin is not exactly going to be putting out the next installment in his epic series any time soon, I really felt like I needed another one to get into in the meantime. With the SyFy show based off these books, "The Expanse", gaining traction, I thought why not give sci-fi a try. I was not disappointed. This first installment only hints at the politics of the universe the authors have created, though I suspect we will get more detail about it in the following installments, but suffice it to say they do a great job setting up a believable world in which humanity has spread out into our solar system, having colonized Mars, the asteroid belt, and beyond. As can be expected of human nature, over the centuries of this arrangement, people in different places have come to have varying degrees of distrust for people from other locations, making the possibility of war ever-present. Amidst this environment we are introduced to a missing-girl case on Ceres Station being investigated by private security Agent Miller and the adventures of Jim Holden and his crew, who are trying to find out who attacked their ship. These 2 plots and the fate of the galaxy all wind up intertwining in intriguing and exciting ways. The story moves along at a quick pace, but still allows time to develop the characters and the world they populate. It is a thrilling tale that you will have a hard time putting down, even if you don't normally read science fiction, and which will leave you eager to get started on the next in the series.

Leviathan Wakes is, without a doubt, the beginning of something amazing. I have the next two books in the series and I am looking forward to reading those as well as the additional novels I don't own yet.
I owned this book for about three years without ever picking it up from my book shelf (I had pretty much forgotten about it) and I may have continued to neglect it were it not for The Expanse being produced by SyFy. Sadly, I watched the first season of the series before reading this novel and I don't like doing that...but I don't feel like it was detrimental in any way. I'd like to discuss a couple of the differences for those who have only either read the book or seen the television show before I do anything else.
There are some pretty dramatic differences between the book and the series, the biggest being that the first season ends about 3/5 of the way through the narrative of the first novel, which is something I truly hope SyFy addresses with the second season since there is a lot going on in that third act of the story.
The other major difference between the book and the television series is that we aren't introduced to the political environment and maneuvering taking place on Earth in the novel, though I appreciate that additional subplot from the show and actually kind of wish it had been part of the book.
Beyond that, the differences are really quite minimal, some characters who don't quite line up between the two mediums (either because of descriptions that don't match up with the casting for the series or because the personalities/interactions are just a little bit off) and a couple of plot points that play out a touch differently or occasionally in different sequence...but those aren't as troubling as they could be.
Written by James S.A. Corey (a fictional person, really the collaboration between Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck), this is one hell of an ambitious novel, successfully weaving space opera, militaristic science fiction, and noir mystery into an exciting, intense, and sometimes even scary tapestry.
The stated goal of the authors was to fill in the gap that is almost always present where science fiction is concerned. Typically we either end up with near-future cyberpunk or dystopian stories or distant future space operas and the like taking place after we have spread throughout the galaxy or even the universe itself. This book (and presumably the whole series) provides the reader with a suitably rich and detailed vision of what we have between those intervals, during the time when we are still colonizing our own solar system and only just considering setting our sights further into what we have beyond our galactic neighborhood.
The interactions between Miller and Holden (as well as their separate storylines) are fantastic and well-written enough that the two protagonists really do provide vastly different lenses through which the same events are being experienced. We see a lot of that in The Expanse, but there is a lot of subtext that gets lost in translation between the two mediums.
After reading this book I am determined to pick up some of Daniel Abraham's fantasy novels, which I might have ended up doing anyhow. The man is an excellent author and Ty Franck clearly learned a thing or two while working for George R.R. Martin where grand, sweeping narratives and visceral (almost punishing) inevitability in narratives are concerned.
Whether you have already seen The Expanse or simply want to read an excellent science fiction novel, I have to recommend reading Leviathan Wakes.

I started watching the t.v. adaptation of “The Expanse” and a little way in, loving it, decided to read the books first. Always prefer it that way round and “Leviathan Wakes” is simply brilliant, a rollercoaster ride through space – a proper epic that holds all your attention first page to last.

A classic tale at the heart of it, a small, motley and eclectic crew who may hold the fate of the universe in their hands, face off against varying powers, battles galore, with plenty of richly layered characters all set against the backdrop of a beautifully imagined future world.

A heady mix of space opera, drama, horror and science fiction, Leviathan Wakes drowns your senses, messes with your heart rate, keeps you up at night and has a disturbingly relentless feel to the more horrifying moments. All this whilst attaching you to the characters in an emotional way that makes you crazy when the bad things inevitably happen.

I adored it – I don’t think I’ve read a book this long in such a short time ever – that cliche about not being able to put it down was almost literally true in this case.

Fantastic writing, clever, intelligent plotting and a visceral, visual feel to it that digs deep, Leviathan Wakes is one of my favourite reads ever. No messing.

Bring on Caliban’s War is what I say.

Highly recommended.

This book had a lot of promise but unfortunately didn't live up to it. It opened well, I was interested in the characters, the setting and the plot (especially the mystery). Unfortunately, these were not well-developed as the plot went on and became something of a slog by the end. There were certainly plenty of good moments, but nothing particularly great or special.

Part of the problem was Miller's crime noir plot. The problem is that if you've read one noir plot, you've read them all. His plot was predictable, unoriginal and I found it hard to care about someone who cared so little about themselves. A world-weary alcoholic cop obsessed with a beautiful missing girl he hopes to rescue (and hopes she will rescue him) is an over-used cliche (why does the girl always have to be beautiful, would he not care if she was ugly?). Miller was best when he had someone else to bounce off, alone he was just too miserable. Also the obsession over Julia was really weird, the ending tried to make it sound noble, but it was just creepy.

Holden was better, especially as he had a crew to interact with, but these characters never got much depth to them. The world-building was similarly shallow and half-hearted, there was no nuance or shades to political struggle. Making Earth one unified blob without any diversity of opinion or action just seemed lazy. Making cities/stations where everything is dreary and decadent gets repetitive and dull. The villain was cartoonishly evil and just lazy. There were also a few holes in the plot and timeline.

However, what really made this a 3 star book was the ending. Without spoiling anything, throwing alien/zombie/hivemind/extermination was really out of place and didn't work well at all. By the end it got so absurd that I couldn't take it seriously. Even the characters comment on how bizarre it was and how it resembled magic, which is a bad sign (if you're writing hard sci-fi things have to make at least some sense). A lot of mystery novels put so much work into building the mystery that when the final reveal comes it's anti-climatic and that's how the ending felt to this.

Leviathan Wakes is the first of the Expanse series and balances two converging plot lines, an incident involving a transport ship which threatens interplanetary conflict, and the investigation of a missing person on a station in deep space.

The writing is solid, the characterisation compelling, and tight plotting moves the story along at pace. The denouement, in particular, was both surprising and deeply satisfying.

Finally, Corey brilliantly balances the world-building and the introduction complex moral, philosophical, and metaphysical ideas without ever detracting from the plot.

All in all, I highly recommend Leviathan Wakes as superior science fiction. I look forward to reading the next instalment.

Having read a lot of Neal Asher and Peter F Hamilton recently - and completely exhausted their respective portfolios - I was looking for a new series to get my teeth into.

James S A Corey's universe is somewhat less technologically advanced than these, with no wormholes, FTL drives or AIs (at least, not so far) and therefore the story-line is constrained to our solar system, which is mapped out in more detail than I've seen for a while; not a bad thing, just different. We're also given more of a feel for some of the grittier (likely) realities of life in both space-ships and colonies.

No super-heroes here, the significant central characters are less-than-perfect and consequently more interesting. I won't attempt a plot synopsis, as I'm sure someone else will have already done so anyway, but suffice it to say that the title of the book offers no clue and you'll never be able to see what's coming more than a few pages ahead. It starts a little slowly, perhaps, but once it gets going, it's almost impossible to put down.

Thoroughly enjoyable, and I ordered the 2nd one in the series just as soon as I finished the first.

An entertaining Sci-fi opera. It has its flaws but there is also a sense of both fun and pace that makes you forgive most of them.
Set in the future where mankind has not made it too far into the stars (mainly our own solar system) there are a few threads here. In the centre is Holden and his small crew and they are the link pulls the story threads through. Miller leads the crime noir aspect as he takes on the challenge of finding a missing girl to avoid his own disastrous life.
They are caught in events that are changing the fragile peace of the solar system. There is a kind of cold war between Mars and Earth and those that work “on the belt” in poor conditions mining and managing resources are caught in the middle. And there is a resistance movement pushing for change. And there is something else, a new force that has a powerful and unknown agenda. And in the middle of all this? Holden and his crew and the weary Miller.
There is a lot here we have seen before and well-trodden tropes, but the author pulls it together nicely and has done some thoughtful world building. There is intelligence in the plot and the writing that makes you overlook the flaws, sit back and just enjoy the ride. There is a lot thrown in here but also some twists and turns that you don’t expect.
Good stuff, as is the “The Expanse” TV show based on this book series. Just for information, season one of The Expanse covers about three quarters of the book.

I wasn't aware of this series of books before the popular TV show The Expanse came out. I enjoyed the show and it stood to reason that the source material would be richer, deeper and more layered. Was absolutely not disappointed. Being character driven the interweaving and over-arcing stories could be viewed as a commentary on a possible and
'realistic' soon-to-be future (dystopian) society or maybe even a warning that people will always need someone to watch out for them as inevitably the people who watch over them always seem to misappropriate and abuse that power/trust.
Having said all that, it's a bloody good story with a wide range of characters that you actually care about. I'm halfway through book four and couldn't be happier knowing that there are three more waiting for me to read when I finish it.

If there was ever a book that simply didn't go where I was expecting, it would be this one. It's rare that an author manages to throw such mammoth curve balls and make it seem not only in keeping but also simply the way things had to go, the natural order of things. I really enjoyed this and honestly, I think I enjoyed just about everything here with no disappointments or let downs.

The concept is fantastic and Corey executes it well with a witty and engaging narrative filled with characters who, even if I might not always like them very much, I certainly cared about. They are three dimensional and utterly human, with all the flaws and chaos that involves. Corey writes well and is equally adept at tension, action, humour and more touching moments. His dialogue flows well, always in keeping not only with the characters but events as well.

I'm thrilled to discover this is a series that I certainly will sink my teeth into!

I started on the books after seeing the first 2 episodes of the TV series. The writing by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck ( aka James S. A. Corey ) is incredible. They paint an incredible picture of epic space and flawed people with driving story lines that just keep you going and going. All of the follow on books find new epic adventures for the characters so enthralling that it is hard to stop reading/listening. My favourite author is GRR Martin, who Frank used to be an assistant for and Abraham has co-authored with but the "pen name" James S A Corey is quickly taking that place for me.

Great plot, less smoothly executed than the TV adaptation

I picked this up having watched the TV based on it, The Expanse – quite unusual for me, as I read more than I watch TV, so it’s more often I find myself watching an adaptation of something I’ve read than the other way around.

This book is generally very similar to the first series of the TV show in terms of its plot and characters (with a few key exceptions) so if you’ve seen that, you’ll know what to expect. If not, expect a well-developed, gritty world based on human colonisation of the solar system, two main storylines (one that’s like a noir detective novel, only in space, the other a more classic space adventure) that interact satisfyingly to form a wider conspiracy theory plotline, and some memorable characters and dramatic moments.

Though I still loved the plot in its original format, I felt like the way it was told was a bit less well-executed than in the tv show. The writing style is quite workaday, and while tense, scary points worked well, smaller emotional human moments didn’t always have the impact you might want or expect.

Overall, it’s worth a read if you like this sort of book and/or are a tv show fan, though for my money, the source material’s ultimately not as good as its adaptation.

Solid but uninspiring basis for an excellent TV show

Having become a fan of The Expanse and currently twiddling my thumbs waiting for season 4 I decided to pick up the books (Leviathan Wakes and Caliban's War) to enjoy the story again from the source.

If anything it has added to my appreciation of the TV adaptation. Though they spin a good yarn the books aren't great scifi and the writing is a tad dull with some pretty flat and cliched characterisations.

Much is made of the "hard scifi" angle in the series which pretty much centres around the physics and limitations of interplanetary space flight, really an extrapolation of current technology which adds some meaningful constraints. This is fine but there isn't much hint of a wider technological universe beyond that.

It's highly unlikely humanity can solve the problem of faster than light space flight etc but you'd expect there would at least be some more exotic materials and so on available to 23rd century humans. Perhaps I miss the futuristic consumer fetishism of writers like William Gibson who seem to pack every paragraph with cool ideas and tech - not to mention snappy prose.

By contrast the Expanse/Leviathan universe is all too prosaic and if anything the much trumpeted political dimension doesn't hold up too well on the page.

There are some minor plot differences between the TV series and the books which I won't go into beyond saying the show sharpens up the political tensions and makes them and the character's motivations more believable, though I'm never going to be convinced by the notion that beyond system failure, and is already 100% recycled on the ISS for example, water will ever be a scarce commodity in space.

As a sketch for a truly excellent TV action scifi epic it works fine but beyond that I'm not convinced.

I'll just have to wait for the next season of The Expanse and hope it doesn't get cancelled (again!).

A long time fantasy reader, I've been hesitant to get into sci-fi for some reason. Took the plunge with this following the recommendation from a family member and glad I did. There's no slow build up in Leviathan Wakes, you're thrown straight into the action and it barely slows from first page to last. Some story twists and the decisions of protagonists are slightly ridiculous but I'll forgive it for sheer non-stop entertainment value. On the strength of this first entry I now own the next four books in the series.

A well written "hard(ish)" sci-fi setting that postulates a future that seems all too plausible. The cast of characters is engaging, from the hard bitten and cynical, yet all too fallible Belter police detective to the naïve Executive officer of the ice hauler who believes in the truth when it would be easier, and perhaps better, not to. The plot moves on a pace and the strands slowly interweave themselves to a satisfying,if somewhat clichéd at parts, climax.

Not as good as the amazon prime series

Don't get me wrong this is a future classic along the line of foundation, dune, etc., but, if you're coming to it after seeing the prime series, you may be disappointed
Oh the old argument - read first or watch first?
In this case read first may be better for the book and you'll still be mightily impressed by the television series
