Jennifer Sey’s career at Levi’s began in 1999 as an assistant marketing manager. By 2013, she had risen to chief marketing officer and in 2020, was promoted to global brand president. It was widely assumed she would become the first woman CEO of the iconic brand. But for Sey, earning the right to fully express herself, especially on behalf of vulnerable children had been hard-won, and serves as the backdrop to the story. As a child and adolescent, she was among America’s top gymnasts, in 1986 winning the title of National Champion. But that success came at enormous personal cost, both physical and emotional – and she eventually became the first former gymnast to blow the whistle on the sport’s pervasive culture of abuse.

By then, she was already a top executive at Levi’s and the company hailed her for her courage. But just a few years later, when she refused to blindly follow the narrative on the government response to COVID-19, her previously loyal “woke” community turned on her. None of her prior political activism in support of children, racial equality in the workplace, or voting rights mattered. Nor did the fact that she was the executive sponsor of Levi’s Black Employee Resource Group. Nor the fact that she had led the company’s initiatives on gay rights, women’s reproductive rights, or gun control.

For all that, she was undeterred. She understood full well the long-term damage that school closures and virtual learning would have on an entire generation of children, and that the greatest burden would fall on the poorest and most vulnerable of them. After failing to rouse the interest of the mainstream media, Sey went on Fox’s The Ingraham Angle to plead her case -- and the internal pressure to fire her reached a fever pitch. Ultimately, Levi’s CEO finally told her that it had become “untenable” for her to remain at the company. Even then, Sey refused to a million-dollar severance package. Why? Had she taken the money, she would have been required to sign an NDA and stay silent about the whole affair—and that was too steep a price.

A riveting story of not only Sey’s 23-year career at Levi Strauss & Co. but of her prior experience as a world class gymnast, Levi's Unbuttoned is a riveting read. It is sure to be one of the top books of the 2022 holiday season.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Jennifer Sey stood up to the mob braying for her head after she had the nerve to publicly challenge draconian mask mandates and school closures. She knew her refusal to back down could cost her her dream job but protecting children was more important. In 'Levi's Unbuttoned, ' we hear the voice and resolve of a woman who's paid a steep price for the sin of being unapologetic and right. Inspirational!"

-- Megyn Kelly, journalist

"Let's face it: we lost our collective mind in 2020 and 2021. But amidst the insanity, a few voices emerged with clarity and conviction. Jennifer Sey's is one of them. She is a model of dignity and courage under fire. 'Levi's Unbuttoned' is a must-read for anybody seeking proof that dark times inspire bright lights. Highly recommended."

-- Michael Shellenberger, author of San Fransicko and Apocalypse Never

"At a time when America needed heroes, Jennifer Sey arrived. As the brilliant young Brand President of Levi's, she had a lot to lose by questioning COVID-19 mandates like school closures and masking children. But Sey continued to question, putting her extraordinary career on the line. She was a woman in the arena, taking abuse from friends, colleagues, and her employer. She never backed down, choosing truth over groupthink, and integrity over greed. Sey was proven right. This is a story everyone should know."

- Michele Tafoya, 4-time Emmy winning sports reporter and host of the "SidelineSanity" podcast

"In the last two and a half years, Americans have been subjected to an unprecedented assault on our most basic freedoms. Jennifer Sey is an American heroine who stood up to the brutality of corporate and government group-think on the most pressing liberty issues of our time. 'Levi's Unbuttoned' is the story of her fight against left-wing tyranny. Reading it is an inspiring and sobering experience. She lost her job, she lost friends and she was even rejected by some of her own family members. But she persevered - and the lessons she learned are informative to all students of history and lovers of freedom."

- Harmeet K. Dhillon, civil rights attorney

"Jennifer Sey showed tremendous resolve when she found herself in the crosshairs of cancel culture for expressing her personal opinions. In today's toxic social climate, a very vocal minority has the mic, and they are using it for emotional extortion. Jennifer refused to be silenced and never backed down, despite the sacrifice she ultimately had to make: her job. 'Levi's Unbuttoned' is an important book because it not only pulls the curtain back on the price that Jennifer paid for using her voice, but it also starts a very necessary conversation."

- Dr. Phil McGraw

"An inside look at woke capitalism from the vantage point of its highest levels and how the covid lockdown became a litmus test of loyalty. A stunning book!"

- Jeffrey Tucker, President, Brownstone Institute

Jennifer speaks from the heart, she is an inspiration for her relentless advocating to reopen schools and find common ground in these turbulent and highly political times. Jennifer stayed true to herself and her values while pushing back on nonsensical and damaging covid policies. Jennifer's high principles, moral compass and clear ethics are admirable. Jennifer knew the difference between right and wrong and wasn't afraid to sound the alarm well before it was a popular opinion. I also really like that this book highlights the importance of free speech, independent thought, diversity of ideas and healthy debate on a variety of hot topic and politically charged subjects.

This book is a story for anyone that cares about their future, their kids future, their grandkids future and so on. It does not care what your political or religious affiliation is, nor your gender, sexual orientation, etc. It speaks to anyone and everyone, most poignantly from the viewpoints of someone from the upper echelon of the corporate world. This is something that is rarely seen or honestly shared. It shows how someone who was most likely scared as hell to risk it all, decided her morals and all she believed in were more important, so she unknowingly jumped and did risk it all to tell the truth. This book is that result. Not only are the words on the paper compelling, but they are also very insightful. They really make you think about who you are and if decisions you make are true to your beliefs or to please others. It makes you think about who our family and friends are and do they really care and love us unconditionally. Can they or can’t they agree to disagree or even consider bring open minded and actually listen to opposing viewpoints. It makes you think about companies (those you frequent and even those you don’t) that are taking away our free-speech (not something I, myself would even think about), not to mention the politics and money behind all of it. In my opinion, this book is not a “you’re either right or wrong” self narrative. It is the story of an amazing, courageous woman, Jennifer Sey, who is showing by example that we all have a voice to use and we should be allowed to use it freely and without consequences. I believe freedom of speech is a principle this country was founded on and one that made us the strongest country in the whole world.
I feel as though many people don’t think what they have to say is “important enough” or they could never write a book or go to a protest. This is not the truth. This is something we have been made to believe by those in power. Writing a book or protesting for your beliefs is not for everyone (most of us I’d say), but if you do a little online researching, you will find those that think and believe like you and in may ways enables us ro make a difference (no matter how big or small). Bottom line, I personally think the takeaway from this book, is to show that everyone still has a voice and we all need to use it to help make the world a place you want to see your kids and grandkids grow up in. Not a world that no longer cares what anyone thinks, but again, is ruled by those in power. The clarity of this jumps straight off the pages of this book. Thank you Jennifer for sharing your heartfelt, courageous and deeply emotional story with us, offering a first hand, behind the scenes view of the power the corporate and political world have over us and how important it is to use our voice (no matter how scared we are and no matter how little or big our voice might be). My deepest regard for your strength and courage in using your voice and sharing your story to help anyone and everyone!!!

Jennifer Sey’s story about her tenure and departure from Levi’s is compelling. It is thought provoking for those who have mindlessly followed the predominant narrative over the past six years, but particularly since the so called pandemic. For those who are awake and have been researching throughout, her story is frustrating that she is ultimately unable to separate herself from the plantation of Woke, instead needing to virtue signal what commonalities she still shares with the “club.” Separating oneself from that club takes even more courage than leaving a highly paid corporate job, because that was employment, but leaving the club is one’s life. Having left two clubs in my life, one a religion, and another a political party, I have lost friends and family along the way, not yet (or maybe ever) reunited. It is personal to the core of one’s being. Sey surfs on the periphery of that rending but is not willing to connect all the dots to see the club in which she still wants admission is no longer hers. She has outgrown it, like jeans shrunk too small to fit anything but one’s lower leg. Nevertheless, I appreciate Sey’s voice in this debate over who we are as a nation and hope her voice will reach people on the fence who climbed there from the swamp of the club and need just that push, Sey’s story, to help them climb the rest of the way out.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book; Sey and I could be best friends. Alot of what Sey dealt with was similar to what I had to deal with as a small county newspaper reporter in the midwest (who sees viewpoints on both sides), but I was a target among people in my small community/county because 1). I'm a reporter; 2). I tried to use my voice as someone who sees both sides to try to make a difference; and 3). My husband was listed as a plaintiff in a lawsuit against our public school to keep masks off kids. You would have thought it was the end of the world. And the other side didn't want to hear that other side. What happened to being open-minded and inclusive? truly appreciated reading this; sometimes I second guessed myself and my stance, but after reading this, I know I follow along the lines of common sense. Thank you; it was a pleasure to read.
