The result is that each side has its own compatibility. Strangely, the packaging doesn't say anything about this.
Devices I tested:
Samsung Droid Charge
Left: USB Mode
Right: AC Mode
ipod Classic 80GB
Right: would not charge
Samsung Galaxy S III
Left: charged (AC Mode)
Right: charged (AC Mode)
Left: charged* (AC Mode)
Right: charged* (AC Mode)
*After the latest SW update (4.2) on my nexus 7, both sides charge in AC mode. Before the SW update, both sides would charge in USB mode, but SW would not indicate that it was charging at all.
For the price, I really wish they would make both sides fully automatic and fully compatible, but it does better than most chargers in attempting to be compatible with as many devices as possible. Also taking it apart required only a screwdiver and nothing was glued together making it easy to open.
So aside from its space requirements it is well constructed (spec grade?) and works as advertised. No more wall warts! I may install a few more in other parts of the house.
I can't recommend this product until they last longer than a few months. I don't want to have to shut the power off and rewire just to keep my iPhones and iPads charged up.
Product shipped with Amazon Prime, arrived in 2 days. Came in a goofy kind of triangle box (not an issue, just an observation.. probably drives the UPS guys nuts).
I can confirm that this does in fact charge on both sides for iPhones and iPods, and ONLY the right side charges iPads. Using the left side usb for an iPad will display "not charging" on your iPad. Additionally, it charged both an iPhone on the left and iPad on the right simultaneously.
Considering all of the alternative products, I don't find the left side not charging an iPad a showstopper for this one. Here's your easy solution.... STOP plugging it into the left side and use the right side.... As long as you don't have the need to charge 2 iPads at the same time, this product is fine. While I wish both sides could charge an iPad, I'm fine with 1 charging an iPhone and 1 charging an iPad. Giving it 4 stars (if both sides charged iPads, it would be a 5).
There was PLENTY of room in my outlet box to accommodate this outlet. I suspect many negative comments on this topic are from users who have older houses and apparently have much smaller boxes than newer homes (mine was built in 1997). There was absolutely NO ISSUE installing... took about 5 mins and NO STRUGGLE at all with the size (I'd compare it to installing a dimmer). Also, more attractive than using usb cord adapters, looks nice and clean.
Hope this helps with all Apple users out there trying to sort out which outlet they should purchase.
The power output of 2.1 amps would make it suitable for tablet batteries as well, but I use extended batteries in my phones which would take for ever to charge if not for this device's high current output.
Very Pleased with the product.
One thing to note, per the information in the paperwork,
"The right USB port is specifically designed for use with larger battery devices such as Tablets, Blackberry Smartphones, Gaming Devices, etc. "
Which means the right port (with the usb ports on top) is the high power port, the left one will give a standard rate of charge so you don't damage small capacity batteries by charging them at too high of a rate.
It would be helpful if this fact was somehow represented on the port itself..
