Editorial Reviews

As "America's Foremost Commentator On Everything", Black is a weekly political commentator on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart", and has starred in four top-rated comedy specials for the network. He's one of the nation's top stand-up comics and has done numerous films and television appearances. Recently, he's been touring constantly to packed theaters on his "Rules Of Enragement" tour, having finished a series of dates with Dave Attell and Mitch Hedberg. This CD catches him live at the Luther Burbank PAC.

You gotta love Lewis Black. Its very rare that you see someone who so gets so angry so easily. Not to mention he's one of the absolute funniest comics working today.

With that said, I was a bit disappointed in this album. I'm not saying that it isn't funny, its just that alot of the material here is pulled from his previous 3 albums. I'd say its about 40% old stuff, and 60% new stuff. His new riffs are great. Very funny stuff about mostly politics from his insane point of view. Its a very good cd. I couldn't not recommend it. But it was just disappointing that I had heard so much of it before.

I own all of Lewis Black's DVDs and CDs, and I am also a big fan of his material on The Daily Show. That said, this is definitely his best CD that he's done.

First, I will have to rebut some of the reviews here -- this is not recycled material. Yes, there are a couple of Superbowl jokes that were reused from The End of the Universe and his 2002 Comedy Central Presents special, and yes, his "civics books" joke was reused from Rules of Enragement. However, those jokes have been far more refined in this performance and are better versions. The rest of the material is original, and of all his performances, he seems to blend with this crowd the best.

Also, the first 8 tracks (with the exception of Gay Marriage) deal with Superbowl Halftime 2004, and nowhere will you find any of this on any of his other CDs or DVDs. The thing with his other CDs is that if you have all h is material, you'll see it all recycled. The White Album is like his 1998 and 2000 Comedy Central specials. The End of the Universe is like his 2002 special. Rules of Enragement is like Black on Broadway, and Carnegie Hall is like Red White and Screwed. You'll find a lot of new material on all of this, yes, but a significant chunk of the pairs I put up have similar jokes in each. Not so with Luther Burbank. This is the only CD of his that I laughed the whole way through, since I rarely ever stopped and thought, "Wait, I've heard this before." If you've seen all he's done on TV, you will barely recognize any of the material on here.

His jokes are hysterical. While he sometimes, though rarely, misses the mark on some of his other merchandise (the latter half of Red White and Screwed is a good example of this), he never seems to miss a beat here, constantly churning out wit like it was nobody's business.

This is a must-buy. If you are diving into his works and want a CD of his, this should be the first one you get.

Whether you just like Lewis Black or are a "Lewis Black junkie" like myself, you will LOVE this performance. He really pulls you in when he's on stage....you don't want to miss one word because his thoughts are IN-credible. I've loved Lewis Black since seeing him on TV a few years ago, plus he appears on Jon Stewart from time to time.Just a lot of fun to see and hear. Get this and you'll really enjoy....he makes the saying so true that "laughter IS the best medicine."

I needed something or someone to make me laugh after Robin Williams' death. I had purchased one of Robin's albums. But even as I laughed, I cried. Lewis Black was the perfect pick me up-so funny!

Thank you, Lewis. And, sorry to see you go, Robin.

I'm a staunch fan so my opinion might not matter to some. If you're tired of the same old stuff and think America has lost it's way, this old boy will tell you the truth and make you laugh at the insanity that is the world today. Enjoy. I did.

This was my first LB album after I heard him on All Comedy Radio. Yes, the SB stuff is slightly updated but man is this one funny - As a Jew, I love how he comes at it. Almost as good as the Yom Kippur stuff on the Carnegie Hall album (tops). His personality is me all the way.

Buy this one. I have all of Lewis Black's CD's, including the one you could argue along side this one as being his best, Rules of Enragement. They are all great albums and if you love angry comics, he's the man for you. He talks about everything you would want a comedian to rant about...mainly what's wrong with this country. This is the perfect starter for those who have recently been turned on to Lewis Black. Buy this one first, then pick up the rest. After hearing this one, you will have to.

All of Lewis Black's CDs are great, but Luther Burbank is the best. He's in top form, the material doesn't overlap with other CDs and the audience is incredibly responsive. Here's my order of his CDs, from most-best to least-best:

1. Luther Burbank (2005) -- Los Angeles
2. Rules of Enragement (2003) -- Minneapolis
3. Carnegie Hall (2006, a double-album) -- New York City
4. End of the Universe (2002) -- Atlanta
5. White Album (his first album, in 2000) -- Madison, WI
6. Anticipation (his most recent, and sadly, his least funny) -- Wausau, WI
