Style Name: CompactFlash/USB 3.0 Reader
I've owned many single-purpose and multi-purpose card readers in the past. USB 2.0, USB 3.0, CF, MMC, xD, SD, SDHC, you name it. I had the nice SanDisk white multi-card reader for a year (SDDR-289) and loved it...until the pins in the CompactFlash slot started to bend. Now, I'm very careful about inserting my cards, but I think it's just a function of the design of the card reader. Which is sad, because it's relatively fast, handles a lot of different types of cards, is streamlined, and pretty. But...bent pins. Annoying. Enter the Lexar Professional Workflow CFR1. I love it! Yes, it is clearly designed for professionals, has a much sturdier build quality than any I've seen, and the card inserts about halfway into the slot before it even attempts to engage the pins. This means your pins aren't going to get bent, which is awesome. Yay Lexar!

It's USB 3.0, and reads my SanDisk 64G U7 card much more quickly than my previous card and reader. I'm seeing about a 120/130 MB/s transfer rate on 30MB (Camera RAW) files. This saves me a ton of time, as I can just copy the images over, and start working in just a few seconds.

No issues with drivers (card readers really don't need them) under Windows 8.1, and it even bounces between my Desktop PC and Mac Laptop effortlessly.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this product to anyone who needs just the CompactFlash (CF) card reader. I would even go as far as to say skip the multi-card readers, and just get this, and if you need to read a different card, get a separate reader. This CF card reader is the boss!

I've owned a dozen CF readers since 2003 and the CFR1 is by far the best in terms of construction, design and upload speeds. It's average in size but rocks an extra beefy plastic case, snug USB port, grippy rubber mat beneath and heavy duty 1-meter USB3 cable. Lexar includes a silicon rubber boot that fits over the front, probably to keep out dust while traveling. I love the simplicity of this reader and choose it because it's not cluttered with multiple card slot sizes I don't use.

The card slot is fitted (snug) and deep--60% of the card is in the slot--making it difficult to go off the guide rails and misalign the pins. The slot is notched so the card won't fit upside-down. Card insertions feel smooth, secure and precise.

The CFR1 uploads RAW image files from my SanDisk Extreme cards (5D MKII & 7D RAW) lickety-split, i.e., a lot faster than my old IOGear USB2 reader. The reader works perfectly plugged directly into my Mac Mini or a RokCore USB 3 hub.

All in all a great CF reader and Amazon's price was slightly better than the other places I checked.

Style Name: Four-Bay USB 3.0 Reader Hub Verified Purchase
I purchased SD and CF readers separately and both work very well well so I bought the Hub and another CF reader in order to download multiple cards simultaneously (which would make my life a little easier).

HOWEVER, when downloading to Adobe Lightroom each reader shows up separately. Lightroom will not allow you handle all the cards as a single download. You must download each card individually.

I will be keeping the hub because it helps keep my desk a little more organized, but if I had known that it wouldn't really do what I had expected I wouldn't have spent the $, (which seems a little high even if it functioned as I had hoped).

The fact that this hub doesn't fully function with Photoshop and Lightroom is stated on the Lexar website, but you have to dig a little so I thought I'd mention it here. I'm not sure how it will integrate with other programs but I'd check before purchasing.

UPDATE: In the comments section below Ameen has posted a link to a work-around for downloading to Lightroom from multiple sources. This work-around makes this hub a bit more valuable to me than I had originally thought so I added a star. If you tend to download multiple cards to Lightroom with any regularity it's worth a look!

Two other minor issues (which I think have been mentioned in other reviews): The hub seems a little more bulky than necessary and it requires an external power source. The individual readers don't require external power on their own.

I just want to point out, because it isn't clear, that you CAN use this without the HUB. Also, it is small (in a good way) and very well built.

The first thing I noticed as soon as trying the device out was the speed. I have tried other SD readers before and while they are quick, they are nowhere near the speed of this thing. Real world transfer speed was about 40mb/s. I don't know if it is the device itself or the fact that it is USB 3.0. Either way, the speed is amazing.

Now, before you think you don't need speed because you are not a professional photographer/videographer, think again. I am none of those and when using other readers or my DSLR to read my SD cards (connected to the computer), I would have to wait a bit for all the pictures and videos to load before I can get to the most recent shots/video and transfer them to my hard drive. With this, opening the folder on the SD card reveals all the content almost instantly. This is so much more efficient and enjoyable, TRUST ME. For $20, to have that type of speed to get your content and start working on it, you can't go wrong.

Another reason I really like this, as I mentioned before, is the size. It is very well built, light enough to take with you anywhere and has a sleek matte black case that has a bit of a texture. The front is glossy, but it adds to the design which I thought was a nice touch since I usually don't like shiny plastic because of fingerprints. It is light, as I stated, but it doesn't feel cheaply made and if you ever have the intention of getting the hub down the road, then this is an excellent choice. I plan on getting the hub, so having the ability to upgrade this system with more readers and attach them all down the road is a nice added bonus.
