From the Inside Flap

A celebrity designer offers simple, smart solutions to small space quandaries

When someone says they live in a small house or apartment, the image that comes to mind is all too often negative—“cramped,” “cluttered,” or “confining.” But America’s leading small space designer, Libby Langdon, knows just how to counterthat stereotype. In Libby Langdon’s Small Space Solutions, she offers a practical, user-friendly guide to decorating small spaces so they look stylish, beautiful, and larger than their actual dimensions.

Libby provides hundreds of tips—or decorating “tricks of the eye”—for solving all small space
challenges. Setting out from the premise that an inviting and yet functional space is achievable even on a tight budget, she delivers practicality and inspiration that’s affordable. She covers it all—from how to find the “theme” of your room to styling and arranging items in a wall unit, from how to go green (using plants) to layering your bed linens for a luxe look.

With step-by-step instructions, each chapter addresses the most common problems encountered in a particular space—living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, office, or hall—and presents real solutions. Hundreds of stunning full-color photographs illustrate various design ideas and transformed spaces. Libby also spells out the top ten mistakes people make in small spaces.
Whether you are an apartment dweller, first-time homeowner, or are just looking to downsize, Libby Langdon’s Small Space Solutions proves that living with less doesn’t mean living without luxury.

This is one of the "small spaces" books that angers me. I have this irrational anger with these books because these rooms are NOT small. If you have room to put a sofa and full sized bed in a bedroom it is NOT a small bedroom! If you can fit 2 night tables, tv stand and chair with ottoman in a room it's not small! Those are normal sized bedrooms. You can not put those things in a 10x10 bedroom and still walk around! I also think the decorating is very amateur, I feel most people could get their rooms to look like these (or better!) without the help of this book. I think it just had a cheap feel to it.

This is the perfect book for who lives in a small house. It gave me countless ideas of what to do and how to optimise storage without looking cluttered. You have to READ the book and not only look at pictures because most of the ideas are explained in detail. Of course you have to adapt to your needs, afterall, the author is not at your house giving a personal consultation.

Libby's tricks on how to use light, draperies, glass and mirrors are my favourites, they have done wonders for my little flat. I am thinking about one room at the time so, I am focused on different spaces and needs each time I read the book. I keep coming back and reading it all again and again. Each time there is a new finding that can fix a little problem that has been bothering me. Some chapters are divided by room use: bathroom, living room. kitchen, but if you live in a small space, those rooms are not always well defined so, read it all and adapt the ideas. I highly recommend it!

The biggest problem with people who buy books about decoration is that they expect to find THEIR houses pictured in the makeovers. That simply won't happen! If you don't read, and only look at pictures, you won't know what is behind the purpose of that picture and can miss important tricks that could be applied to your own house for your benefit.

I live in a small apartment, and Libby Langdon's book has given me so many terrific ideas for giving my space more persoality. I have finally used paint to brighten up my boring white bathroom and living room and it has made a huge difference. I've also used fabric on a wall panel in my tiny dining area to cozy it up, and used floor to ceiling drapes in my bedroom to make it seem larger. This book is great because it gives such a wide variety of ideas, many of which don't cost a lot of money. It's all about knowing the "tricks of the trade," and Libby reveals all the great design secrets! Plus, she has a great personality, so you really enjoy reading the book.

I have a dozen books I'm using in re-decorating my apartment and this is my favorite. Disclaimer, I'm more comfortable with solid colors and open spaces than prints and cozy full rooms and so is Libby Langdon. She has gotten me over my fear of paint and given me great ideas of what I do need to add and what I already have that I can re-purpose. Her ideas on color and color combining, and furniture placements were very helpful.

I have spent the last 20 years in various spaces under 700 sq feet, and Libby knows ALL the tricks and taught me a few new ones. Her asthetic leans towards the polished and sophisticated while keeping warmth and comfort. She shows both average apartment before and afters and full "show" home decorating. There is something for most everyone here.

Thank you Libby, I look forward to your next book.

While I agree the spaces she shows aren't what I would consider technically "small", there are TONS of great tips and ideas in this book. I made a few small inexpensive changes she suggested to my kitchen (stainless steel back splash behind my stove/cabinets) and living room (wall arrangement that includes mirrors) and basically tranformed my space immediately. I plan to tackle my hallway and second bedroom/office next with some of her tips.

This book is well worth the money just for the tips alone so I highly recommend it - small space or not. The tips are cost conscious but effective.

I very much enjoyed all the helpful information Libby Langdon packs into her book, Small Space Solutions: Secrets for Making Any Room Look Elegant and Feel Spacious on Any Budget (Knack: Make it Easy). There are many ideas and hints I will be able to incorporate into decorating my 800 sq ft home.

However, the Kindle Edition has too many typos and missing photos to warrant the $9.99 spent for the convenience. Very distracting and even more frustrating. What a disappointment.

Some great ideas to be found in this book. It is one of the better books out there on the subject. I have been collecting similar books for my daughter-in-law who is moving from a 1200 Sq. Ft. Condo in the midwest to a 525 Sq Ft apartment in Brooklyn.

The title sounded like some theory illustrated; but very basic ....not very dynamic or inspiring. There is lots more out there on simply websites. You want a book you buy (re:decor) to be a reference or have some inspiring looks/photos....this one could be from 20 years past, quite dated and uninspiring. I was finished with it in an hour and carried it to the thrift shop.
