In Raw Justice, we meet Jennifer Lane, a young attorney without glamour and an underrated talent for the law. There's a deadly new strain of Hepatitis on the loose, along with Annabelle James, a woman who has run off with the only known formula for the vaccine for this ticking time bomb. That's just the beginning. Jennifer goes on one heck of a journey through love, the capriciousness of the law, the miasma of her own family history, and the battles of mental illness around her and her own anxiety and panic attacks. Like Willa, whose court she does pass through at one point, her career is on the line. Great look at corporate espionage and the breakdown of our justice system. The End Notes of this series are interviews with Capri that touch on her fondness for John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee. In this novel another author from the Golden Age Of Mystery Novels, and his creation, show their influence on Capri. It was lots of fun.
In Mistaken Justice, a schoolteacher in love with her job is losing her sight. The sound of a dull thud as she's driving home in the dark leaves her wondering if she hit a trash can or something living. After briefly considering a call to her friend Willa when the next day she suspects it wasn't a trash can she hit after all. Nobody should live with the nightmares Darla fights.
The two novels and the novella, Mistaken Justice, take place in Florida. The reader travels with Capri to regions most of us won't get a chance to experience, and lifestyles that may seem foreign. Whatever the journey, it's always warm and a fantasy escape from the cold of winter.
That ends when Cold Justice begins. Willa is on vacation in her second home in Traverse City, Michigan. My husband is from that area, and Capri passes along the chill with a clear voice. It brought back many memories. Willa is cut free of her judicial boundaries, and when a car crash turns out to be murder, she's in there with her smarts and well-trained mind for connecting the dots of the details for the sake of justice.
This is my first exposure to Capri's writing outside of her Jack Reacher spinn-offs. Regardless of which series Capri writes, she always enlightens the reader on some aspect of the law without making the machinations of justice seem like research painted on the story for the heck of it. I come away thinking, and that is appreciated.
An incredible value in this boxed set. I felt I got a lot of story, information, a large and complex variety of characters and plots at a bargain price. I appreciated the action and suspense with a minimum of gore and explicate sex. Nothing in these novels is gratuitous.
