This story begins shrouded in mystery, with the author giving just enough to keep your curiosity at a high, but not being totally confusing to the reader. I really am liking this author’s style.
Sugar is a fighter, underground, of course. She meets Catch outside of a store where he gives her a pack of cigarettes to give to a homeless man. She thinks he is hot, but rich, arrogant and rude. She runs into him again, at her fight. At these fights, there are pretty much no rules. Only the women’s fights have some semblance of rules. But this night proves different. Sugar faces off with 3 opponents. One has a pipe, but Sugar is smart, and uses that to put them on the ground. Only one of the women pulls a gun . Chaos breaks out and it is lucky that Catch saves the day and gets her out of there.
Catch is proving difficult for Sugar to read. The sexual tension is there, but she won’t use that in exchange for his help and protection. Catch won’t accept her body as payment, as he doesn’t want her like that. His actions are proving different to his words. He has Sugar a heated, turned on mess, but he doesn’t seem affected.
I am such a short way in and the drama is frantic. At the turn of almost every page, something exciting and energetic is happening. So much is occurring at once, it is making my head spin.
Sugar’s DNA donor (her father) is a hideously evil man.S She has to follow his rules to the letter, or there are cruel consequences. He had Catch’s father killed, so both of them share a thirst for their turn at him. Revenge will be sweet. Catch is there to save Sugar once again, when she runs from her donor. Things are never as they seem in this drama packed saga. While Sugar is open book, Catch remains a mystery I am obsessed with deciphering.
I can honestly say that I have never read a book quite like this before. I am totally enthralled with finding out who Catch really is, and when I am not totally absorbed in Catch and Sugar, I am obsessively thinking about them. This book is just evoking everything in me. Where has Courtney Lane been all my life. I must sound like a lunatic, but this book is so different than any other book I have read. I apologise for repeating myself, but it just has the power to drag all these different emotions that I have not experienced so simultaneously before. I am having trouble focusing on life when I am not reading Lies and Lullabies.
This incredible feeling I have is so new. And trust me, I have read thousands of books, So I thought I could not be surprised anymore. But it seems I can be, after all. This author is such a gift. There is a lot of graphic violence, so it may not appeal to everyone, but if you can get past that, this is an extremely good read.
The excitement reaches boiling point, with things beginning to make so much more sense to Sugar. She is terrified of Catch, more so because of the way he makes her feel. She is still not sure what his real agenda is, but resisting him is proving futile. It is evident Catch wants revenge on Sugar’s father, Michael Leone, and will stop at nothing to get it. Even using Sugar in his twisted plan to end the Loene dynasty. Now Michael is a monster in it’s truest form, so his demise will be a relief to society. One less monster. It seems Sugar was just a means to an end in Catch’s game. I refuse to believe, that after justice has been delivered to Michael Leone, that this is the end for them as a couple.
“Every villain wants something different,” he continues methodically. “Villains from birth, they want the tangible. But the villains who are made? They want the intangible - love, acceptance, a legacy, or power. Whatever it may be that they can’t see, touch or obtain, that’s what they want. A few want a shred of evidence proving they could’ve been good.”
This book is seriously twisted, seriously mess up. I loved it!!! Never have I been so messed up over a book before. In a good way, of course. The surprises were endless, the violence and dramatics were extreme. I cannot pinpoint exactly what captivated me, but I could literally think of nothing else until the very last word.
Courtney Lane had my entire attention, which is a true testament to her writing abilities and her extraordinary talent in spinning a terrifically twisted, manically mind blowing tale of mystery, murder, suspense, drama and a warped kind of love. I keep saying twisted, because it really was. Magnificently so. That is not an sensationalising it. That is the reality of it. Well, my interpretation of it, anyway. While this book will not be to everyone’s liking, I have never enjoyed a book of this genre quite so much. This author’s talent is scarily brilliant, and I simply cannot get enough. I am now the proud owner of all of her work, and plan to devour them all, one after the other. A million stars for this crazy epic book.
She knew it was wrong but loved him anyways. I like that the H didn't apologize for who he was or why he was but he loved her and made it so she knew. She had the choice.
The twist and turns were good and definitely sometimes caught me by surprise but it didn't make say OMG that was amazing. But it's still a well written good book. Worth the read.
