Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me: Debunking the False Narratives Defining America's School Curricula Hardcover – June 11, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
A college professor debunks the myths that have infiltrated America's school curricula.
In 1995, James W. Loewen penned the classic work of criticism Lies My Teacher Told Me, a left-leaning corrective that addressed much of what was sanitized and omitted from American history books.
But in the decades that followed, false leftist narratives—as wrong as those they supplanted—have come to dominate American academia and education. Now, in the same spirit but updated for 2024, Wilfred Reilly demolishes the scholastic myths propagated by the left, uncovers fresh angles on “established” events, and turns what we think we know about history upside down. Among the popular lies he debunks:
- “The ‘Red Scare’ was a moral panic that caught no commies”
- “Native Americans were peaceful people who spent all day dancing”
- “European colonialism was—empirically—a no-good, terrible, very bad thing”
- “The racist ‘Southern Strategy’ turned the South Republican”
- “The Vietnam War was unpopular and pointless”
Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me sets the record straight on many of these myths, explaining that there actually were communists in Hollywood; that many Native American tribes were cannibals, owned slaves and made them march the Trail of Tears with them; and that history, while almost always bad for Black Americans, was much worse for all of us than we tend to think it was.
Smart, irreverent, and deeply researched, Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me will revolutionize your understanding of history and reveal a new and refreshing way to teach and think about the past.

Modern American morality is an aberration. If we don’t understand that, then history will be nothing but one long shock to our naive systems.Highlighted by 168 Kindle readers
What we don’t understand is that contemporary Western beliefs about human dignity, inalienable rights, a right to freedom, etc., are the exception, not the norm. If they seem like the norm today, that is largely because we have remade much of the world in our image.Highlighted by 163 Kindle readers

Review
“Wilfred Reilly is the indispensable man in today’s politics: brash, fearless, hilarious, and insightful, he frustrates his enemies as he baffles with hard realities. Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me is a vital work, and everyone interested in politics should have a copy on the bookshelf.” — Ben Shapiro
“Wilfred Reilly channels the spirit of Thomas Sowell in his new book, Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me, which masterfully debunks left-wing talking points on race, sex, colonialism, and more. Reilly is a fearless writer who delights in confronting long-standing taboos and marshaling social science to correct the recording. This book is the antidote to mindless liberalism.” — Christopher F. Rufo
“Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me is the perfect book for combating the false narratives and fake history that have robbed too many high school and college students of critical thinking skills. Using facts and data, Reilly takes readers on an unforgettable journey that will leave them wondering what other lies they have believed.” — Carol M. Swain

- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a very well researched book, I greatly enjoyed it. I do have an issue with the coverage of the Vietnamese War. Mr. Reilly thinks that the Hard Hat Riot, a strong presence of Vietnam veterans among the hard hats, was between those who wanted to win the war and those who wanted to lose. After around 2 million Americans had served there was an objection to calling the war a mistake as it would seem that the sacrifice of so many was a waste. In addition, America had never lost a war, the War of 1812 was seen and a draw, and there was a reluctance to see Vietnam as a loss. Mr. Reilly infers that there was adequate support for winning the war but there wasn't. LBJ, with no support, withdrew making Humphrey the Democratic candidate. Humphrey was doing very poorly in the pools until about a month before the election he promised to stop the bombing which saw his numbers go up. This was largely seen as a willingness to end the war. LBJ would make the same promise days before the election which once again boosted Humphrey but not enough. There was insufficient support for fighting to victory. Nixon ran on 'Peace with Honor'. Peace with Honor meant not losing rather than winning, in other words Nixon was looking for a draw so that the US could withdraw without defeat. After the election Nixon reduced our presence using bombing and cutting off the supply routes in Laos and Cambodia. In the reaction to troops crossing into Laos, seen as a betrayal Kent State staged a protest pitching normal students against an untrained national Guard which fired into the crowd. In shock the NG would train its soldiers in riot control. The Guardsmen would carry unloaded weapons while only select NCOs would have ammunition on their persons. With the war rapidly winding down Nixon would badly defeat McGovern, an immediate peace candidate. The last draftees would go to Vietnam in December 1972. The US would withdraw in March 1973 accomplishing Nixon's Peace with Honor. Saigon would fall in April 1975.

Dr. Reilly is a strong academic voice blazing the trails into the future that great men like Thomas Sowell and the late Walter Williams have been doing for decades. Read it yourself and gift it to another!
