FBI agent Joshua Phoenix doesn't have the time for relationships with the demands of his job. Now he's going undercover deep into the Russian Mafia, and it's turning out to be much more than he can handle. He never planned on meeting Gabriella Shannon, or the instant connection they have. She's beautiful, and the feelings grow strong quickly. His job is the big obstacle, as he can't tell her anything, nor can he say when he can see her or call her. The things he has to do will haunt him forever, and has the potential to destroy her. When his cover is blown, he has to make a decision that will affect them all.
Lies is my very favorite book of this author, and also the one that upset me the most. I'm not sure my heart will ever be the same as it's been ripped out, stomped on, and waiting to be stitched up. The character development is fantastic, with secondaries that rock! A fast paced, exciting, and well written story line flows perfectly. C.A. Harms captivated me from the beginning, kept my heart racing continuously, while holding me hostage to the end. The story is highly addicting, and intense with brilliant twists and turns that kept me on my toes. Now the cliffhanger ending is where I get upset, as I NEED THE NEXT BOOK NOW NOW NOW, and I may or may not be stalking the author while calling her bad names. I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY AND HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!
I have some mixed feelings about this story. I mostly like it and found it really enjoyable, exciting even, but there was one thing that rubbed me the wrong way. I'll get to that later. Lies (Phoenix Undercover #1) is the first book in the series and it is not a series of standalones. I don't know how many books that the author has planned, but there will definitely be a book 2, as there is not conclusion to the characters' story.
This story is centered around Josh and Gabby. Josh is an undercover FBI agent. He meets Gabby at a bar while trying to hide from a disastrous double date. After they meet and start getting to know each other, Josh is called to duty. The couple decide to try to make it work, even though there will be hardships due to his undercover status. I enjoyed Gabby and Josh together. The dialogue between them flowed really well. They are a well rounded, fun couple. Gabby is very relatable. She's just a normal girl trying to navigate through life and a new relationship. Josh was great: sweet, attentive, hot. He was the complete package.
This book is packed with enough action to give the reader an idea of what Josh goes through while undercover and on duty. On the flip side, we see how life is for Gabby while waiting to hear from Josh while he is under. There are times when he is suddenly gone for weeks at a time and unable to get word to Gabby. This is where I got annoyed with Gabby. Not just once, but, I thought, several times her reaction to him being gone were irrational. She knew the score when they decided to pursue the relationship, so she just plain annoyed me.
Even though I didn't agree with some of her reactions, this was a really great story. The pace of the story was steady, so I didn't lose interest at any point. I call the end of this book a semi-cliffy. Josh and Gabby's story is far from over, but it ends in a way that it isn't totally tragic and leaving you on the edge of your seat. The author just simply paved the way for book 2.
Josh was GORGEOUS and incredibly swoon-worthy. I loved how much *he* loved Gaby (who was adorable, btw!). I don't often love female characters, but Gaby quickly became one of my favorites. Her and Josh were perfect for each other. They truly clicked and completed each other. There was no doubt in my mind that he would do ANYTHING to protect Gaby. And I mean anything.
CA Harms truly nailed it with this Romantic Suspense. I could not stop turning the pages from the moment I started reading it. The mystery, the action, all the twists and turns, EVERYTHING had me wanting to find out answers NOW. So I kept on reading...I kept on devouring this amazing book. I felt like I was constantly on the edge of my seat, trying to come up with possible outcomes in my head! Sure enough, CA Harms managed to surprise me time and time again with how she developed the plot. I won't go into ANY of the details because honestly, you HAVE to experience this novel first-hand. All I am going to say is that you are in for one heck of a ride.....
THAT ENDING.......... OH...MY...GOD!
This book is a must. FIVE STARS!!!
