It’s been a week since Carly Moore’s friend Jerry was run off the road and killed, and the sheriff’s department has already struck out on leads. She’s not about to sit back and let it go, but the last thing she wants is to endanger anyone else.
Besides, as she learned long ago, problems come in threes.
A mysterious woman causes a ruckus in the tavern where Carly works and leaves behind a note: We’ve got some unfinished business, Carly Moore. I’ll be in touch. The stranger looks like trouble, and Carly knows it means nothing good. Then, on the heels of that encounter, she gets shocking news: the crime syndicate her father co-ran has been taken down by the authorities.
She’s not foolish enough to think her father has been neutralized, but she realizes she needs to act against him soon if she wants to stop hiding.
The deeper Carly digs into her family’s past, the more dirt she finds. But lies are told for a reason, and there are people around her who are willing to kill to keep the truth hidden.

About the author

New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling author Denise Grover Swank was born in Kansas City, Missouri and lived in the area until she was nineteen. Then she became nomadic, living in five cities, four states and ten houses over the course of ten years before she moved back to her roots. She speaks English and smattering of Spanish and Chinese which she learned through an intensive Nick Jr. immersion period. Her hobbies include witty Facebook comments (in own her mind) and dancing in her kitchen with her children. (Quite badly if you believe her offspring.) Hidden talents include the gift of justification and the ability to drink massive amounts of caffeine and still fall asleep within two minutes. Her lack of the sense of smell allows her to perform many unspeakable tasks. She has six children and hasn’t lost her sanity. Or so she leads you to believe.

this might be the best out of all the others in this series. Learning more about Hank in this book makes
me just fall in love with him so much more, even with how he cares so much about Carley, like a father.
“Don’t be fooled, little girl,” he said, a harsh tone creeping in. “The scariest monsters know how to hide in the light of day.”
“I don’t want you to go,” he said, looking devastated. “If I could, I’d keep you here. But you and I both know you don’t belong here.” A traitorous tear slipped down my cheek. “That has to be the cruelest thing you’ve ever said to me.” “A good parent does what’s best for their child,” he said, his voice breaking as he clung to the porch post. “Not what their selfish heart wants.”
But now, I’m really unsure about Wyatt. In the beginning I liked him and wanted things to work out for him and Carley, but now that time has gone on he seems so different, I don’t even know what to think. I want him to be trustable, but I just don’t know. It’s hard to figure him out.
I am in love with Marco though, and love Carley and him together. They’re so perfect it’s the best.
“Marco.” I intended to protest, but the words didn’t come out. “Carly,” he said, turning toward me. “Do you know I’ve never once seen you cry over this mess? Sure, a few tears here and there, but no bare-your-soul sobbing.” He tucked a strand of hair behind my ear. “I think you’re due a good cry, Care. It doesn’t mean you’re weak.” He gave me a wry smile. “If this was happening to me, I would have been bawling before we left the parking garage.”
And Max, I do love Max. <spoiler>and I’m really glad that he knows all about Carley now. It’s nice to have someone else that can help her to if needed. Even though there is worry about being able to trust him, everything seems good and I hope it stays that way.</spoiler>
Now I’m just left dying to see what’s going to happen next and how everything turns out. Especially with Wyatt. Will his father ever be brought down, will Carley ever be safe and free from her own father, what’s Wyatt and Max’s mother truly like? Is she actually a really good person or is she just as bad as the father? I guess I’ll just have to wait in see.
“Actually,” Wyatt said in an aggrieved tone, “it is.” He turned to me. “If you’d just get the hell out of town, you wouldn’t need to be dealin’ with this nonsense. Who’s after you now? Louise Baker? Did Bingham turn on you? Or did you set off Crimshaw after you interfered with his family?” “Fine,” I snapped. “You’ve made it pretty clear you’re not interested in helping. Let’s go, Hank.” I turned around to head back to the car, steaming, but Hank said, “You get back here.” I stopped in my tracks, still pissed. “That man doesn’t want any part of this, Hank, and I’m not gonna make him!” “That man will tell you what to look for, or I’ll take my crutch to him.”
I looked over at Hank again. “Anything else you’d like to know?” Fire flared in his eyes. “I think I’ve heard enough.” “What’s this all about?” Wyatt asked. “None of your concern,” Hank snapped, then got inside the car.
I ran back to Hank’s car and slammed the door shut, just as the black truck drove down the side road toward the highway. “What the hell?” Hank barked. “Follow that truck!”
The Lies She Told, the latest book in the Gardner spin-off series featuring, Carly Moore, is another excellent example of Ms. Swank's skillful characterization. As I read this novel, I was struck by how Carly has grown from a victim to a woman willing to fight for justice and what she knows to be right. She still struggles with her fear of rejection and trust issues, yet is able to recognize the subtle differences between her past abusers and her current friends. Once again, Denise has continued to add layers to our heroine. The result is that as a reader you become more enthralled with Carly and her friends. It is impossible to put this book down.
Along with the character development, Denise continues to add more twists and turns to the plot. I was again on the edge of my seat trying to determine who was plotting against whom. You know you are really getting into a novel when you begin to yell at people in the book like they can hear you and possibly respond. (Spoiler alert: Just what is going on with Wyatt Drummond? Has he lost his mind?) At any rate, I lost sleep reading this novel until 2-3 AM! There was no way I could put it down just when it was getting to the good part! The only problem being, as soon as I finished one good part, I would come to another!
I really hope Denise Grover Swank keeps writing! Because if she keeps writing, I will continue to have great things to read!
In the fifth installment, a stronger and more assertive Carly searches for answers about her present and past. Her relationship with Marco is more profound than ever before, and she’s learned to trust him. Love and passion flow through the pages with a beautiful intensity. Carly knows, though, that the path she’s taking might make her lose it all. The same goes for her daughterly love for Hank, a former drug czar in the region.
When a mysterious woman arrives in town, and crimes and lies pile up upon one another, a whirlwind of action and emotion takes over, and the story leaves you breathless and wanting for more—begging for more —screaming for more. Now!

Many outstanding questions from the series are answered here while leaving enough for the final book in the series. We get to see more of Hank in this excellent book.
The characters are so well written that with each one, I find myself wondering whether I actually like them or not. Are they suitable for Carly, and will they help or hinder her? Mostly, I feel concerned with whether they can be trusted or not to help keep her safe.
I’m so invested in this series that I can’t believe that we are almost at the end, and while part of me can’t wait for the next book, the other part of me doesn’t want to read it and for the series to end!

Lots of revelations, lots of questions answered and more questions to discover.
This fifth book has it all - mystery (not only one), murders, laughters, friendship and love all the way.
Love Marco now even more than before. Hank must be my favorite character now after Carly and Marco of course.
Well written, fast paced story with twists that won't let you go until the end. Denise Grover Swank, well done again! You got me surprised, and that's what I love about your books.
Can't wait for you all to read it and see what you think!

If you’re reading this review and you’ve not started Carly’s story yet, go and start with book one - a cry in the dark. If you’ve already started Carly’s story then you won’t need me to tell you that this is an automatic read.....and book 6 is an automatic pre-order!

I absolutely love Hank and we got to see a bit more of who he was in this book, shocks and all.
Would definitely recommend, especially to fans of Rose Gardner.
