- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2020This book is highly recommended. Life with ADHD offers the reader a series of perspectives and tools to manage ADHD that are both practical and inspirational. He, correctly, shows us that ADHD is a condition that can be (and should be) managed and not a disease or disorder to be treated. He shows us that ADHDs advantages can be used to make our lives betters, while the disadvantages of the condition can be practically and successfully managed.
Dr. Jaksa's advice is based on decades of work as one of the leading ADHD therapist in the world as well as personal experience living with ADHD. His words offer inspiration to those who live with ADHD and for those who live with family and friends with ADHD.
The practical advice includes things like scheduling time, making lists, and maintaining accountability. However, it also includes advice on the fact that those with ADHD are not abnormal and do not need to be treated as such. Overall, this book is an excellent study on the best ways to manage ADHD on a day-to-day basis and is very highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2020Thank goodness for self-publishing and the freedom it gives authors. At a slim 156 pages, this book has more useful information than one three times its size and it perfectly acknowledges its audience. It's not filled with case studies or anecdotes that add little-to-no value, things that can make reading a challenge for some with ADHD (like myself). It's an easy read front-to-back and I know I'll be going back to it in the future.
Whether this is your first book about ADHD or you have a library full of them, it's a worthwhile read. It will be the first book I recommend to others that are looking for more info on the topic.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2020Dr. Peter Jaksa has written an excellent book. He has been a leader in the field of ADHD for decades and has helped thousands of individuals with ADHD. Life with ADHD gives important foundational information on a range of ADHD topics to help families succeed and thrive. Highly recommended! - Gene Carroccia, Psy.D., author of Treating ADHD/ADD in Children and Adolescents and Evaluating ADHD in Children and Adolescents
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2020Great common sense strategies to help overcome some of the difficulties those of us with ADHD struggle with.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 29, 2020A quick, easy-to-read book about ADHD that explains it well. One of the best I've read on this topic, and believe me, I've read many.
What I like most is how Dr. Peter Jaksa honors the individual who happens to have ADHD. He doesn't minimize the degree of chaos and difficulty that ADHD can cause for those who have it and for those around them who are affected by it, and at the same time, he doesn't let those with ADHD off the hook either. He has a gentle, but firm way of helping re-direct the focus away from the problem to where it belongs--on the solution.
I now understand that ADHD is manageable, though it takes practice and sustained effort to manage it well. And there are just as many positive traits about ADHD as there are negative traits. As Dr. Jaksa, so aptly puts it: it's "Biology, not Pathology."
If you're new to reading about ADHD or if you're well-informed already, I highly recommend this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2020For those of us with ADHD this book offers great practical advice. This is a great read and one you want to continue reading until you reach the end. Along the way there are many pearls that I highlighted as I went along.
There are three key modalities in the treatment of ADHD: medications, behavior management and exercise. Behavior management, in my opinion, carries the most weight. Dr Peter Jaksa is, without a doubt, amazingly adept at helping his patients navigate the complex maze ADHD represents. I highly recommend this book.
